Purpose The purpose of this paper is to counter-propose a new approach of SWOT analysis, which can be used in the strategic planning of the contemporary organizations. Design/methodology/approach This paper, after presenting the conceptual context of the existing (conventional) SWOT analysis, presents the existing criticism within the international literature. Then, it articulates gradually the new evolutionary and correlative SWOT analysis, by using the approaches and the literature of evolutionary economics, and the Stra.Tech.Man approach in business dynamics. In conclusion, it presents the new conceptual framework on which a new correlative SWOT analysis can be based. Findings Main finding of this research is that the interpretation of the conventional SWOT analysis tends to study the strengths and the weaknesses of the business with an analytical dichotomy. The conventional SWOT analysis conceptualizes, usually implicitly, the opportunities and threats of the external environment as having the same impact to all the socioeconomic agents, without exception. However, by using a correlative interpretation of SWOT analysis, we understand that the opportunities and threats are always “potential,” depending on the organization’s strategic capability to exercise its comparative strengths and weaknesses. Originality/value In the existing literature of SWOT analysis, despite the growing criticism, there is no critique that can give systemic and correlative answers to the articulation of business strategy in SWOT terms. The Stra.Tech.Man approach, also, is a conceptual framework to study the evolutionary adaptation of all the kinds of socioeconomic organizations.
This paper is part of the broader theme of change management studies with the view to present, in particular, the approach of managing change and innovation in terms of Stra.Tech.Man (Strategy-Technology-Management synthesis). After a brief review of the principal theoretical approaches and the main study directions in the analysis of the problem of change management, this paper examines the critical dimensions in the study of contemporary organizational change perceived in the theoretical perspective of a "living organism" as against the "mechanistic" approach to organizations. It concludes by examining change management in terms of Stra.Tech.Man, expounding and analyzing the five steps of Stra.Tech.Man as a new conceptual approach to managing change.
In the current state of globalizati on's restructuring, numerous studies are examining policies to strengthen local entrepreneurship and producti ve systems, in terms of clusters and ecosystems. In this arti cle, we apply and extend the Stra.Tech. Man approach to entrepreneurial dynamics as an alternati ve base of arti culati ng a business ecosystems development policy. By studying the case of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, one of the less developed regions in Greece, we fi nd that there are possibiliti es for using the Stra.Tech.Man approach to imprint, record and, by extension, give the possibility of strengthening the strategic, technological, and managerial capacity of the "cells" of specifi c business ecosystems. In this context, the aim of this study is to outline a new possible directi on for policy planning and implementati on, in order to expand the local business ecosystems' innovati ve and competi ti ve competence, especially in the context of a less developed region, by the usage of the ILDI (Insti tutes of Local Development and Innovati on) mechanism. In this directi on, we present an "introductory" and qualitati ve fi eld research we carried out in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, on a sample of SMEs, in diagnosti c terms of Stra.Tech.Man physiology.
Purpose :The growth potential of SMEs entrepreneurship is examined at regional and local level, initially on a Global scale and then for the case of Greece. Additionally, the possibility of an economic development policy beyond the macroeconomic approach is examined, focusing on business growth and competitiveness in the light of meso and micro-economic policy approach. Design/methodology/approach: This research leads to the proposal of building knowledge mechanisms and direct and efficient systematic development and innovation at the local level, particularity during a time of economic crisis. The establishment of Institutes of Local Development and Innovation (ITAK) is primarily geared towards promoting innovative entrepreneurship and extroversion of locally installed businesses. As part of the proposal for the establishment of ITAK, a questionnaire was developed -a tool to initially measure companies' opinions on the need for outside help in the macro, meso and micro environment, in order to demonstrate that ITAK local-level structures could be developed. Findings:The survey results were accrued via the analysis of questionnaires distributed to companies. The results of the questionnaires in the micro-environment in relation to those in the macro-environment shows a lower tendency to change business, which may be because managers perceive economics several times more in macroeconomic terms rather than in meso and micro economic (terms). Research limitations/implications:The restrictions of this particular research are the small sample of study of businesses in one country (Greece); this is because the approach of study, which is quantitative-qualitative, limits analysis to small data sets in the current phase.
The current global socio-economic crisis and restructuring reshapes the terms of study of the global dynamics as a whole. A new generation of interdisciplinary socio-economic research on the matter in question seems to be progressively emerging in international literature.Against this background, it gradually emerges the understanding, that any attempt to interpret the individual contemporary socio-economic phenomena, which relate to the crisis and the attempt to restructure globalization, can only be inadequate and ineffective, since it fails to fully approach the current dynamics of globalization in synthetic, holistic terms.In this direction, new interpretative approaches seem to intensify interpenetration and conceptual syntheses between the different fields of socio-economic sciences, in an increasingly unified perspective, by extensively "borrowing" -in a direct and indirect way-methods and theoretical "lenses" derived from system science, chaos theory, and evolutionary economics.In the depth of this methodological rearrangement, according to the position put forward in the following paper, it is crucial that an effort is made to move from a conjunctural to a structural perception of the crisis. Ultimately, the great challenge for the field of study of global dynamics nowadays is the transition from the methodological principles of the traditional mechanistic interpretative method to a coherent and integrated evolutionary socio-economic perspective.
This study explores Porter’s diamond of national competitiveness, by critically examining both the analytical virtues, the extensions, and the criticisms it has received over time. The aim is to analyse the stage in which the study of the diamond is currently in, about twenty years after the introduction of M. Porter, suggesting that its analytical contribution focusing on the industrial dynamics (meso-competitiveness) is still relevant even though significant analytical repositioning and improvements are possible. This research attempts to integrate a set of evolutionary socioeconomic dimensions into the “diamond’s” analytical perspective, ending up with a proposed “competitiveness web” conceptual model.
The conventional neoclassic approach of the entrepreneurial economic development perceives innovation to a large extent restrictively and unproductively. In a parallel motion, the conventional Keynesian perspective proves to be as well insufficient to study the innovation dynamics evolutionary and dialectically.On the contrary, toward a theoretical repositioning of the innovation studies, there are appearing new approaches that continue the evolutionary study of the capitalistic Firm’s physiology that began in the mid-20th century.This paper focuses especially on this theoretical redefinition to innovation dynamics. It tries to unfold a view of the Firm of physiological and evolutionary type, by highlighting a new synthesis of Strategy, Technology and Management (the ‘Stra.Tech.Man’ triangle) that represents the organic center of the produced innovation, inside all socioeconomic organisms.
