This study aims to analyze space planning of accommodations in seven closed schools involved in experiential activity programs on Jeju Island, a famous tourist destination in Korea. The results are as follows. First, 35 schools had been closed down in Jeju between 1982 and 2015. Among them, four closed schools were sold, three are currently used by the Jeju special self-government provincial office of education, and 25 are being leased by individuals, village organizations, and other entities. However, they have not been well-operated, and so strategies for the effective management or operation of these closed schools should be developed. Second, there are distinctive differences in space planning of accommodations based on the correlation between experiential activities and the types of participants. If the experiential activity participants are mainly individuals or small groups, the closed school is likely to plan double-bed accommodations and individual bathrooms rather than large group rooms. Third, in order to operate experiential activity programs, closed schools require four different spaces for experiential activities, lodging, dining, and sanitation. The largest space available in each school building is used for experiential activities, and original classrooms are still in use. According to the standard drawing of school architecture, standard classroom size since 1997 has been 7.5ร9 meters, and lodging rooms have mainly been re-planned based on the module of the standard-sized classroom. School cafeterias are utilized as dinning and kitchen spaces. For sanitation purposes, original school restrooms are still used by experiential program participants, while the shower rooms are newly equipped.
Architectural & Interior design communication is a process of exchanging information between architects and other professionals, clients, and prospectus users, and a design medium is a means of communication. Using non-immersive, conventional media, it is challenging for architects communicate physical details and users' activities in not yet built three-dimensional buildings to others. Recent advances online, Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) allow architects and other professionals to experience a virtually constructed building together using anthropomorphic avatars. In addition, MUVEs also enable them to be aware of the presence and activity of each other. Previous studies suggest that the aforementioned characteristics of MUVEs may facilitate communication between architects and others. But these are focused on communication in controlled experimental conditions. This paper discusses the ways in which MUVEs are applied for authentic and long-term collaboration, design studio, and cultural heritage reconstruction projects, produced by digital design group at the UC Berkeley and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and analyzes the influences of MUVEs on those projects. MUVEs helped more precise communication between architects, electronic engineers, and medical staffs, who are collaborating for developing pioneering technology for hospitals. In design studios, MUVEs allowed students to experience other students' design outputs, and thus helped them share ideas mutually. In addition, in cultural heritage reconstruction projects, MUVEs were used for communicating with historians and residents in order to collect evidence. Based on this study, we propose that MUVEs have strong potential for enhancing the communication between architects and other professionals.
The purpose of this study is to research the characteristics of literature related to environmentally friendly for a village-focused green index. In order to make an assessment, keywords relating to green architecture were selected: environmental friendliness, ecology, sustainable, Noksaek (Green in Korean), green, and environmentally friendly. In addition, three keywords defining the scope of space were also selected: building, village, and city. Quantitative changes and contents of articles containing the keywords were analyzed. The result is as follows. First, 'sustainable' and 'ecology' were the terms most frequently used as parts of subjects and titles, respectively. Second, the studies relating to green architecture focused on villages mostly examine the actual conditions of the villages; criteria for environmental friendliness, analyses and evaluation of the environmentally friendly features of the village; and ways to establish a green, ecological, and sustainable village. Finally, when it came to establishing a village-focused green index, the environment, resources, and energy are shown to be very important elements. In addition, the term 'ecology' in a green index is shown to be significant for the management of the natural environment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citationsโcitations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
