Objectives The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) at admission in predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with infective endocarditis. Methods 133 definite IE patients (≥18 years) according to modified Duke criteria, treated in our tertiary care hospital between December 2009 and May 2019, were retrospectively analysed. Symptoms, comorbidities, predisposing valvular diseases, prosthetic valve, device, history of injectable drug use, blood culture results, echocardiography findings, and complications were collected. We calculated the SII as follows: SII = platelet count × neutrophil count/lymphocyte count at admission. Results The median age of the patients was 56 (40–66) years. Prosthetic valve disease was the most frequent predisposing valve lesion. Staphylococcus species were the most common microorganisms. The most frequent complication was in-hospital mortality (22%) followed by renal failure. Older population, syncope, increased inflammatory markers, high systolic pulmonary artery pressure (PAPs), heart failure, renal failure, and septic shock were associated with high mortality. However age, syncope, hypocalcemia, not going to surgery, and SII were independent predictors of in-hospital mortality. According to receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal SII cut-off value for predicting mortality was 2314 (area under the curve 0.641; P = 0.019). Conclusion We demonstrated that high SII levels are independently associated with in-hospital mortality. The SII may be a promising prognostic predictor for patients with infective endocarditis.

Although there were no statistically significant differences in clinical and radiographic success rates among the 4 groups, MTA appears to be superior to formocresol, Portland cement, and enamel matrix derivative as a pulpotomy agent in primary teeth.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic knee and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint osteoarthritis (OA) in the elderly (> or =50 years of age) urban population of Antalya, Turkey. According to the 1997 national census, Antalya's population was 508,840. By random cluster sampling, 655 individuals aged 50 years or more were interviewed face-to-face and subjected to structured interviews regarding knee pain, worsening pain on exertion, and the gelling phenomenon. They were also asked about performing namaz (a fundamental act of worship in Islam performed five times a day), smoking, type of residence, type of toilet, work style, and duration of walking per day. They were also questioned about swelling in DIP joints. In the case of suspicion of knee OA, the individuals were invited to the hospital for further evaluation by physical examination and direct roentgenogram. The diagnosis of knee OA was based on clinical or clinical and radiographic findings. The prevalence of symptomatic knee OA was determined as 14.8% in the population aged 50 years or over. Advanced age, female sex, namaz, and type of residence were found to be associated with knee OA. The rate of symptomatic knee OA was significantly lower in smokers and those walking more than 2 h per day. Female sex was also strongly associated with OA DIP joints. OA of DIP joints was found significantly associated with symptomatic knee OA. The latter is a major health problem in the elderly population, especially in about one fourth of women aged 50 years or over. These data suggest that advanced age, female sex, and type of residence are risk factors.

Aim This study aims to determine the frequency of COVID‐19 related AKI and to identify the early predictors of AKI. Methods This study is a single‐center, retrospective, observational study. Hospitalized COVID‐19 patients between 24/03/2020 and 31/05/2020 were included in the study. All patients were evaluated for renal dysfunctions with urine dipstick, protein/creatinine ratio, albumin/creatinine ratio in spot urine, serum cystatin C, serum creatinine level on hospital admission, and 28th day of hospital admission. To assess the utility of these parameters to predict AKI, a receiver‐operating characteristic curve was generated and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Results 348 patients were included. The average incidence of AKI was 4.9% (n = 17). The incidence of AKI in mild, moderate and severe COVID‐19 cases was 1.3% (n = 4), 9.0% (n = 3) and 76.9% (n = 10), respectively. Proteinuria was detected in 7.8% (n = 27) of patients with a urine dipstick test. In spot urine analysis, proteinuria was found in 20.1% (n = 70) of patients. The frequency of persistent proteinuria was 5.2% (n = 18). The AUC alue of serum cystatin C, D‐dimer and albumin/creatinine ratio to predict COVID‐19 related AKI were 0.96 (0.90 to 1.0), 0.94 (0.89–0.98), and 0.95 (0.91–0.98). Conclusion In COVID‐19 patients with normal serum creatinine levels on hospital admission, albuminuria, serum cystatin C and D‐dimer levels may be an early predictor of COVID‐19 related AKI and these patients should be monitored closely for AKI. Since the sample size in the AKI group was small, our study results should be confirmed with larger cohort studies.

Neither fecal lactoferrin nor fecal calprotectin has a role in the identification of necrotizing enterocolitis, especially in early stages of the disease. Further studies on wider necrotizing enterocolitis series are needed for a more definite conclusion.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Antalya, Turkey. A cross-sectional study was performed face-to-face using a structured interview. Subjects were asked whether they had arthritis at present or previously. Subjects suspected of having RA were invited to the hospital for physical examination and laboratory investigations. Diagnosis of RA was confirmed if the patient fulfilled 1987 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for RA. A total of 3173 subjects were interviewed. The diagnosis of RA was established in 12 subjects. The prevalence of RA was determined as 0.38% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.16-0.59]. The mean age was 49.92+/-11.56 years in subjects with RA and greater than that of other subjects (p<0.001). Of 12 subjects with RA, 9 had previously been diagnosed with the disease. Rheumatoid factor was detected in the sera of eight subjects. RA is less frequent in Turkey than in Northern Europe. Different genetic and environmental factors may have a role in this result.

Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome (CDS) is a very rare neutral lipid metabolism disorder with multisystem involvement. In order to not underdiagnose the cases, screening of lipid vacuoles in neutrophils from peripheral blood smears in patients with ichthyosiform erythroderma is needed. Few case reports revealing ultrastructural findings of skin and especially liver in that disorder were observed. Here we discuss clinical and electron microscopic findings of two siblings with CDS.
