Supernumerary teeth are relatively common in the oral cavity and are characterized by an excessive number of teeth. The term "mesiodens" refers to a supernumerary tooth located in the midline of the maxilla between the central incisors. Mesiodens may cause a variety of pathological complications such as impaction of the maxillary central incisors, tooth retention or delayed eruption of the permanent incisors,crowding, eruption within the nasal cavity, formation of diastema, intraoral infection, root anomaly, root resorption of adjacent teeth and cyst formation accompanied by bone destruction. Therefore it is recommended to follow-up with regular radiographic examination. Early diagnosis minimizes treatment needs and prevents associated complications. The present case, followed for 7 years, presented bilateral mesiodens resulting in delayed eruption of the permanent incisors and emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary management and long-term follow-up.

The term mesiodens refers to a supernumerary tooth located between the maxillary central incisors. The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristics of mesiodens among children in Turkey.The study population involved 24 children who attended the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Ege University for dental problems. The characteristics of mesiodens were obtained from clinical and radiographic examinations. Results showed that twenty-four patients had thirty-four mesiodens for an average of 1.42 mesiodens per person. Males were affected approximately 3 times more frequently in comparison with females. Forty-two percent of the patients had bilateral mesiodens.All of the mesiodens were conical in shape and 91 % were in the downward position. The age and sex distribution, location, direction, eruption of mesiodens and effects on permanent maxillary incisors were also presented in this study. It could be concluded that, delayed, ectopic or asymmetric eruption of the central incisors should alert the clinician to the possibility of a mesiodens.

Aim: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features of 64 patients with keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). Materials and Methods:The patients ranged in age at the time of diagnosis from 8 to 74 years (mean: 38.20 ± 16.71). Postoperative follow-up period was 3-8 years (mean time 4.76 ± 1.10). This research was carried out on panoramic radiographs and histopathological samples. Data such as gender, age, treatment methods, location of the tumor, presence of impacted teeth and its histological features were subjected to descriptive statistical analyses with the statistical software program. Results:Of the 64 analyzed cases of KCOT, 68.8% of them were men and 31.2% were females (male-to-female ratio was 2.2:1). It was observed that KCOT peaked in the third and fifth decade of life (23.4%-20.3%). The incidence of KCOT was higher in the mandible than in the maxilla (76.6%-23.4%). There was recurrence in nine out of 64 subjects (14.1%) in the follow-up period. The recurrence was more often found in posterior mandible. It is noteworthy that in 9 recurrent subjects, 7 lesions were parakeratotic and 4 lesions were associated with daughter cysts. Conclusion:Although there are several studies about KCOT in the literature, the choice of treatment modalities remains controversial. In recurrent subjects, more aggressive therapy approaches should be considered. Periodic controls and aggressive treatment approaches may be effective in the prevention of recurrences. (%23.4-%20.3).
