AbstractThis study aims to examine flowering phenology, floral biology and morphology, and the reproductive system and success of the floral morphs of Psychotria carthagenensis Jacq. The long flowering period lasts from May (dry season) to January (rainy season). Flowering of the floral morphs was synchronized and the number of inflorescences, buds in pre-anthesis and flowers per plant were similar. Anthesis of the flowers of both morphs was 12 hours. Significant differences were observed in the corolla length, the stigmatic lobes, anthers and styles between floral morphs. Pollen viability was high in both morphs. Intermorph and intramorph pollinations resulted in fruit set. There was no significant difference between intermorph treatments in fruit and seed production. The flower attributes indicate that both morphs contribute similarly to species persistence in the study area.

Floral traits and pollinators on fruit quality of sour passion fruit cultivarsAbstract - The objective of this work was to determine the floral traits of eight cultivars of sour passion fruit and identify their pollinators, as well as to evaluate the influence of natural pollination on fruit quality, in the region of Tangará da Serra, MT, Brazil. A completely randomized experimental design was carried out, with ten replicates and one flower per plot to evaluate morphometry, and with four replicates and five flowers per cultivar to determine the fruiting rate. The following parameters were evaluated: flower morphology and morphometry, flower longevity, frequency of floral visitors, natural fruiting rate, and fruit quality. Flower morphology and morphometry were compatible with pollination by large-size bees; they were also compatible with pollination by medium-size bees for the cultivars IAC-275-Maravilha, IAC-277-Jóia, BRS SC1, BRS RC, and BRS GA1. The greatest flower longevity was observed for the IAC-277-Jóia, BRS GA1, BRS RC, and BRS OV1 cultivars. The frequency of bees as Xylocopa (2.0%) and Bombus (3.9%) was low, and 'BRS GA1' received the highest number of these bee visits. Natural fruiting rate was low (36.67%). Naturally pollinated fruit show physical traits compatible with those required by the market standards.
ABSTRACT. The aim of this work was to verify the efficiency of the anticipated selection of superior plants in intrapopulation breeding of passion fruit. The experiment was conducted at the Mato Grosso State University experimental area. Eight populations were evaluated. Planting was carried out in August 2010 following the randomized blocks experimental design, with ten repeats and ten plants per plot. The production characteristics of mass and number of fruits were evaluated from data obtained from two cultivation periods, the first year and the full two-year cycle of culture. Estimates of genetic parameters indicate the possibility of selection gains. The accuracies of fruit production, fruit number and fruit mass characteristics had high magnitude, independent of the selection cycle. Coincidence index estimates were high for all characteristics. Based on the results, early selection (first year) was efficient and reduced the time of selection for the best plants and can be used for passion fruit breeding. Keywords: selection gain, Passiflora edulis Sims, productivity.Seleção antecipada no melhoramento intrapopulacional do maracujazeiro azedo RESUMO.
-(Floral attributes, ornithophily and reproductive success of Palicourea longepedunculata (Rubiaceae), a distylous shrub in southeastern Brazil). Floral attributes, ornithophily and reproductive success of Palicourea longepedunculata Gardner were studied in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. This species is a distylous shrub that occurs in wet forest understory. In an area of seven hectares, the frequency of the morphs was found at a ratio very close to the expected 1:1. The fl owering period extended from March (end of the rainy season) to September, with a fl owering peak in May/June (dry season). The fl oral attributes of the morphs were similar, i.e., the fl owering of the fl oral morphs was synchronous, and the numbers of infl orescences per plant, fl owers per infl orescence, open fl owers per infl orescence and per plant of the fl oral morphs were similar. The pollen grains of the morphs presented similar sizes, as well as their viability. Palicourea longepedunculata is self-incompatible and mainly pollinated by Phaethornis rubber (Aves, Trochilidae), which accounted for 62.07% of the foraging bouts. The reproductive success was similar between morphs: the numbers of fruits per infl orescence were, in average, 85.7 (L-morph) and 107.1 (S-morph) and there was no signifi cant difference in the production of seeds (one or two) per fruit between the morphs. Fruits were similar in height, width and weight.Key words -Atlantic forest, fl owering phenology, hummingbirds, Palicourea, Phaethornis RESUMO -(Atributos fl orais, ornitofi lia e sucesso reprodutivo de Palicourea longepedunculata (Rubiaceae), um arbusto distílico no sudeste do Brasil). -The productivity and physicochemical quality evaluation is important, as it identifies superior populations. however, launching products requires following the descriptors according to DhE test instructions. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate three passion fruit populations with high productivity and physicochemical quality characteristics for commercial launch. The experiment was conducted at the State University of Mato Grosso experimental area, located in the municipality of Tangará da Serra, MT. The experimental design was complete randomized block design with four replicates and ten plants per plot. The physicochemical characteristics were submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Tukey test. For the distinctiveness test, 25 descriptors were evaluated, where quantitative data have been converted into multicategoric data to obtain the dissimilarity matrix. From the dissimilarity matrix, groups were formed using the Tocher and UPGMA methods, Livestock and Supply Department. The highest productivity and number of fruits were verified for BRS Rubi Cerrado cultivar and UNEMAT S10 population. Populations and cultivars presented physicochemical characteristics that meet the required quality for both fresh consumption and industry use. Based on the distinction test among genotype, it was observed that the descriptors were effective for population differentiation. UNEMAT S10 population has characteristics that distinguish it from other cultivars and populations evaluated, and presents high agronomic performance; therefore, it can be launched as a commercial cultivar. Psychotria ipecacuanha, commonly known as Ipeca, is a medicinal plant of pharmacological and economic value. The species is distylous; it has populations with two floral morphs, one with long and one with short styles. Apart from the presence of two floral morphs in a balanced ratio (1:1), reciprocal herkogamy of the reproductive organs between alternative morphs is desirable to maintain cross-pollination. The risk factors for genetic erosion and conditions for sexual reproduction in natural populations of P. ipecacuanha were investigated. The main risks for genetic erosion in four populations studied were: habitat change in the forest fragment where they occurred and in the surrounding area over the last 20 years; proximity to agricultural areas; frequency of drought affecting the forest fragment; and the area occupied by the species within the forest fragment. All evaluated populations were isoplethic with the reciprocity of reproductive organs varying across populations. Anthropogenic factors, associated with morphological and reproductive characteristics (e.g., low reciprocity between anther and stigma and low pollen production), indicate risks for the maintenance and reproduction of Ipeca in the population of the municipality of Denise. Habitat loss, small clusters, and the low number of reproductive plants jeopardize the survival of the studied populations.
