This paper supports the appropriateness of the objectives of the Librarianship and Information Science (LIS) graduate university studies system in Spain. It identifies formulas to allow the construction of innovative study plans which are attractive within the information society. LIS university studies started in Spain in the 190s although professional training has been available since the 19th century. This gives an historic perspective from which to analyse what has been done and the goals achieved using different parameters. The authors have adopted a critical vision because they argue that the objectives defined for LIS programs have only marginally been achieved, and the new fields and work prospects have not been very well explored. As a result, an important fall in the registration of students in the LIS degree has occurred over recent years.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to show that some important astronomical information is still not taken into account in the documental description of historical star catalogues. Design/methodology/approach -A sample of 28 historical star catalogues (eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries) from the Royal Institute and Observatory of the Spanish Navy was selected in order to analyse their structure and to identify information patterns. Findings -The analysis shows that there are a number of technical parameters which are not present in the cataloguing standards and which should be taken into account in the bibliographic descriptions of these specialised documents since they are of great interest to astronomers and astrophysicists. On the other hand, star catalogues provide some cartographic information which can be described by these standards but whose corresponding fields are not widely used by cataloguers. Originality/value -A proposal of new technical parameters is given in order to try to improve the bibliographic records of these astronomical resources. Some directions are also given in order to identify the sections of the catalogues where these parameters may be found, making the task of locating them easier. Typology of historical astronomical resources and map libraries and archives in Spain: state of the artAbstract: The state of the art about a type of specialised resource with great historical and scientific value is presented: the astronomical documentation. First of all, the main types of astronomical resources are defined focusing on their historical evolution. Secondly, the result of a survey carried out between April and May 2014 about the astronomical collections in Spanish map libraries and archives is shown taking as a reference the IBERCARTO directory of 2012. Conclusions show that almost half of queried libraries and archives map have these type of documents, but disseminated in different collections. Moreover, around 70% of the institutions have catalogued all of their astronomical documentation and have used the classical encoding (MARC 21) and cataloguing standards (ISBD and ISAD(G)), although recent studies have shown that these standards are not the most suitable ones to describe it. Hence, a satisfactory scientific information retrieval is not achieved.
ABSTRACT:To determine the effectiveness of the dissemination of cultural identity through the Internet, we provide an assessment of the most significant electronic resources in different European countries for the promotion and teaching of their language and their culture spread on the Internet. The studied webs are Instituto Cervantes, British Council, Società Dante Alighieri, Instituto Camões and Goethe-Institut. The Instituto Cervantes is the best located and offers the most positive indicators and parameters obtained in the analysis.
