Abstract: Black women, religiosities and protagonism in Brazilian cinema -This study seeks to identify similarities between the central role of the feminine in Afro-Brazilian religions and in the imaginary constructs about "saint mothers" (mães de santo) in Brazilian cinema based on producer Alfredo Sternheim's 1974 film "Pureza Proibida" (Forbidden Purity), and producer João Daniel Tikhomiroff's 2009 movie "Besouro" (Beetle). Based on cultural studies, feminist criticism, and film theory, this paper discusses the intersection of race and gender identities and observes forms of visibility and multiple configurations of the black woman in these audiovisual narratives. Keywords: black women, brazilian cinema; film analysis.
AbstractFrom articles published in scientific journals classified by CAPES/Qualis evaluation in the concepts A1, A2 and B1 in July 2013, this study presents a brief survey of the intersection of gender and race in research on audiovisual communication and cinema, with the aim of identifying new perspectives, thematics and approaches, particularly related to the studies of audiovisual reception. It also proposes a reflection concerning the possibilities and challenges of this field of investigation, which articulates culture, feminist criticism, gender relations and the experiences of the subjects. In general lines and from the data collected, it can be inferred that the intersection between gender and race have a limited representativeness in the scope of Brazilian audiovisual communication and it is also rarely covered by the studies of reception in the country.
