ResumenEl presente artículo socializa un estudio realizado en la Universidad Santo Tomás Bucaramanga; en el que se investigó con una población de estudiantes (que no se matriculó en el segundo semestre del 2013) las causas que generaron su deserción, conocer el estado de satisfacción frente a la universidad, el conocimiento del programa institucional de retención y sostenibilidad académica-PAAI; y saber el grado de intencionalidad de retornar. Se aplicó con la población de estudiantes una metodología mixta de estudio cuantitativo (encuesta) y cualitativo (entrevista), así como consultando en grupos focales a los docentes que acompañan el programa de retención. El estudio concluye que el aspecto econó-mico y el embarazo son las causas mayores que generan la deserción, se in eren aspectos altamente positivos de satisfacción frente la Universidad Santo Tomás, y se dan sugerencias para continuar con las políticas de mejora en bene cio de cuali car los procesos de calidad que apunten a la permanencia de los estudiantes y así reflejar estándares de inclusión social en el ámbito de lo superior.Palabras clave: Bienestar, deserción, retención, satisfacción estudiantil, universidad, Abstract:This article socializes a study conducted at Universidad Santo Tomas Bucaramanga; where the causes that led to desertion in a population of students (not enrolled in the second half of 2013) were investigated, as well as the degree of satisfaction concerning the university, the knowledge about the institutional program for retention and academic sustainability -PAAI; and the intentionality of returning to USTA. Applying a mixed methodology of quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interview) study, and also by consulting focus group of teachers linked to retention programs; the study concludes that the economic aspect and pregnancy are the major causes for scholar desertion. Highly positive aspects of satisfaction concerning Universidad Santo Tomas were inferred. Finally suggestions are given for further improvement policies in favor to qualify accreditation processes through strategies and policies aimed at the permanence of students, and thereby showing standards of social inclusion in the scope of higher education. ResumenGracias a los estudios sobre deserción universitaria a nivel mundial y las investigaciones adelantadas en Colombia con el fin de aumentar las tasas de retención y sostenibilidad del alumnado en el sistema de educación superior, se han logrado identificar algunos factores de mayor incidencia en el abandono de estudios por parte de la población universitaria. Dichos factores están relacionados de manera preponderante con las actitudes del alumnado, aspectos sociales, académicos, económicos, institucionales, de contexto familiar socioeconómico y de adaptación del sujeto a la institución.Pese a que existe esta categorización de factores relacionados con la deserción y que a partir de ello se han implementado políticas de Estado para aumentar las tasas de retención y sostenibilidad de estudiantes en las universidades colombianas, los más recientes informes publicados por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia, advierten que para el periodo de tiempo comprendido entre 2008 y 2011, el porcentaje de estudiantes que desertó de las universidades, tanto públicas como privadas, osciló entre el 44,9% y el 56%, cifras que según la Organización para la Cooperación Económica y el Desarrollo (OCED), ubican a Colombia como el segundo país con mayor índice de deserción universitaria del mundo, después de Italia.Ante esta realidad el Ministerio de Educación Nacional ha insistido a las instituciones de educación superior, sobre la importancia de iniciar procesos de investigación que permitan dentro del contexto y realidad propios de cada institución, abordar la problemática de la deserción universitaria como primer paso para el diseño de estrategias que apunten a combatirla. En este contexto, el grupo de investigación "HUMANIDAD", de la Universidad Santo Tomás, ha desarrollado una serie de estudios tendientes a abordar la mencionada problemática desde diversas perspectivas.Dicho abordaje se lleva a cabo durante los años 2008 a 2011 con la población estudiantil activa en cada uno de los 14 programas académicos que oferta la Universidad Santo Tomás Bucaramanga.En primera instancia el estudio se centra en la incidencia que han tenido las políticas de admisión de la universidad Santo Tomás con respecto a la deserción universitaria y en segunda medida, en la medición del impacto logrado por el programa institucional de retención y sostenibilidad académica de estudiantes con relación al aumento en los índices de permanencia y graduación oportuna.
