A gestação é um período de marcantes alterações no metabolismo materno acompanhadas por um importante aumento das necessidades nutricionais da gestante, visto que além de suprir seu próprio metabolismo, os nutrientes são essenciais para o desenvolvimento fetal. Dessa forma, quando essas adaptações nutricionais não são adequadamente ajustadas, observam-se as deficiências de macro e micronutrientes, que podem provocar possíveis efeitos adversos para ambos, mãe e feto. Há importantes evidências na literatura demonstrando o papel de vitaminas e minerais como determinantes no desfecho da gestação. Embora alguns nutrientes como o cálcio, zinco e folato já tenham sido amplamente estudados, o papel de outros no período gestacional, como as vitaminas do complexo B e vitamina E, foi pouco explorado. O presente artigo visa à compilação de informações sobre o papel metabólico dos micronutrientes cuja deficiência afeta a saúde materna e fetal, principalmente em países de baixa renda. Será descrita a função e papel desses micronutrientes na gestação, bem como as consequências da deficiência nessa etapa da vida da mulher. As principais fontes alimentares e recomendações de ingestão para cada um deles também serão descritas.
