This study aimed to: describe the epidemiological profile of the meningitis cases notified and confirmed in the municipality of Ponta Grossa -Parana State/Brazil and to analyze the mortality rate of this disease per year, between 2001 and 2005. The epidemiological data were collected from Sinan database at the 3rd Paraná State Health Regional. The variables selected were sex, age, race/skin color, prior-existent illnesses, meningitis type, evolution of the case and sequels. Among 401 notified cases, there was a predominance of males, children under 9 years of age, white race, absence of priorexistent illnesses and sequels. Viral etiology was the most frequent, with the mortality rate ranging from 5.39% to 17.24%. Meningitis monitoring is indispensable in order to subsidize the adoption of control measures, fast diagnosis, and early treatment. ABSTRACT: The high incidence of traffic accidents (TAs) involving young people has been attributed to proper behaviors at their age. Thus, the present study objectified to associate risk behaviors in the traffic to demographic characteristics and the involvement in TAs among academic students of the Health area at Ponta Grossa State University -Paraná State in 2005. A self-answerable questionnaire was used, whose studied variables were: demographic characteristics, risk behaviors in the traffic and involvement in TAs as drivers. The total sample took up 624 academics, having been excluded 126 that didn't drive. Association tests of the chi-square and odds ratio were applied, with significant level of 5%. For the studied risk behaviors, males and the age group ranging 20 to 21 years presented a larger frequency of such behaviors. The association between the risk behaviors and the involvement in accidents revealed dependence among the variables.
