Palavras-chave: Margem; favelas; informalidade; marginalidade, estado Abstract The present paper, based on the analysis of a selected set of laws that, produced since the beginning of the twentieth century, seek to deal with Rio's favelas, aims to reflect on the way in which the state and its legal order have produced these territories as margins. The bibliographical review emerges as the adequate method to this end insofar as we also analyze how the narratives linked to the theory of marginality gradually identified in the favelas the image that per excellence fulfilled their definition. On the other hand, we also used the documental method to deal with the reading of the laws in the observed period. The article proposes to contribute to the debate, within the field of law and urban studies, about the place of the State and the legal norms in the production and management of its own margins. Keywords: Margin; slums; informality; marginality, State
