Sócrates sigue siendo una figura sumamente enigmática para los estudiosos modernos, que en su mayoría han visto en Platón la fuente más confiable para reconstruir la enseñanza de este filósofo ágrafo, dejando de lado el testimonio de Jenofonte, que es considerado de menor valor. Con base en los estudios de Luccioni, Souto Delibes y Salay este trabajo se propone hacer algunas observaciones someras sobre la imagen de Sócrates que la crítica actual desprende de los escritos socráticos de Jenofonte.
Antes de referirnos al contenido del libro, conviene mencionar que la autora obtuvo el doctorado en filosofía por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y labora como docente en el Colegio de Letras Clásicas, de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras. Se ha especializado en estética y teoría del arte, es egresada de la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado La Esmeralda (Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes). La sólida formación de Alicia Montemayor la motivó a realizar una tesis doctoral de gran complejidad, tras pulir algunas partes, la ofrece en formato de libro.
En este artículo se analizan dos pasajes donde Jenofonte describedos clases de mujeres, el primer texto se localiza en Económico, X, 1-13, y elsegundo pertenece a Memorables, II, 22-23, aquí se relata el mito de Heraclesen la encrucijada. Ambos pasajes se complementan y permiten inferir cuál erael ideal de belleza femenina para este socrático.
Si bien el arte griego ha sido ampliamente estudiado por diversos autores y a lo largo de los siglos ha sido objeto de mucha atención, no por eso debe pasar inadvertida la aparición del libro aquí reseñado, el cual además de proporcionar una breve y sustanciosa semblanza de la producción artística griega, aporta algunas observaciones dignas de tomarse en cuenta.
En este artículo deseo demostrar que, a partir del ambiente de profunda división social que imperaba en la Atenas de su tiempo y de su experiencia personal, Jenofonte adquiere plena conciencia de la función tan relevante que desempeñan la φιλία y la gratitud en la formación del ser humano καλὸς κἀγαθός. Luego de analizar el marco histórico en el que vivió este socrático, así como algunas peripecias que afrontó a lo largo de su existencia, es posible percibir que la gratitud y la amistad ocupan un lugar muy importante en su propuesta de paideia. Por eso, a través de varios de sus protagonistas el estratega trata de inculcar el fomento de la φιλία y de la gratitud; ya que las considera características esenciales del varón “bello y bueno”, es decir, del buen ciudadano. Las fuentes principales para sustentar estas ideas son la Anábasis, la Ciropedia, Memorables, el Económico y el Hiparco.1 En concreto me referiré a la postura que tenían en torno a estas dos virtudes Agesilao, Ciro el Joven, Ciro el Viejo, el hiparco, Iscómaco y Sócrates.
