This paper aims at treating the concept of transparency, as opposed to opacity, understood not as the predictable character of the meaning from the form, which identifies the notion of iconicity, but as the amount of meanings expressed by forms. While in an iconic relation the language structure reflects in some way the structure of experience, in a transparent relation what occurs is isomorphism, i.e. a one-to-one relationship between the units of meaning and form, as understood by Functional-Discourse Grammar (Hengeveld; Mackenzie 2008) and, more particularly, by Hengeveld (2011), Leufkens (2015 and Hengeveld & Leufkens (forthcoming).
