La comprensión lectora es un proceso interactivo en el que intervienen diferentes factores y se construye una representación propia, organizada y coherente sobre el contenido de un texto. En ella se destacan tres niveles específicos que deben ser desarrollados para alcanzar la comprensión total de un texto: el literal, el inferencial y el crítico. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar el grado de desarrollo, en cada nivel de comprensión lectora, de los estudiantes del tercer grado de primaria de una institución educativa pública en Riohacha, Colombia, con la finalidad de elaborar propuestas de intervención que permitan mejorar el desempeño en los niveles más débiles. Para ello, se desarrolló una investigación cuantitativa, con diseño de campo transeccional descriptivo, en la que participaron 37 estudiantes. Estos fueron observados utilizando una escala de estimación la cual fué analizada luego usando estadísticas descriptivas. Entre los resultados se destaca que en el nivel literal de la comprensión lectora los estudiantes lograron un desempeño medio, mientras que en los niveles inferencial y crítico su desempeño fue bajo. Estos resultados sugieren que los estudiantes tienen debilidades de comprensión lectora que deben ser atendidas mediante intervenciones pertinentes.
