The production of large volumes of scientific information, considering its cost, requires approaches that ensure its maintenance, reuse and recovery. These concerns prompted the emergence of digital curation. We intend to discuss the relevant thinking concerning the costs of digital curation. This means addressing the definition of the concept and the issue of costs, based on the studies related to cost models. A literature review was conducted using B-On and RCAAP as research sources, exploring the perceptions of the authors regarding the digital curation and its costs. The views expressed were organized around a scheme based on the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) lifecycle and the reference model Open Archival Information System (OAIS). It is proposed a systematization of digital curation issues bridging the DCC life cycle view of the digital object curation to the OAIS reference model approach, using a cross view seized by cost models and plan/data management policies.
The advent of the information paradigm has shaken many of the principles of archival theory and practice. One key issue is knowing to which extent can digital information be trusted. Digital resources are represented by metadata, and trust consists in demonstrating their authenticity. Since the traditional elements used to verify the authenticity of analog records are not suitable in the digital world, the field faces a major challenge. The use of abundant, pertinent and constantly captured metadata seems to one of the most relevant solutions. This article aims to contribute to tackle this issue by setting the goal of proposing a model that attempts to include the most relevant metadata elements to capture the information that contributes for ascertaining the authenticity of digital archival descriptions. To that end, mixed methods methodology are employed. A qualitative documentary research is used to collect, analyze and interpret a corpus of scientific literature. As a complement, the quantitative technique requirements engineering is used to extract from international description standards the metadata requirements that can assist in the presumption of authenticity. Both approaches are then combined through a critical lens into a single unifying model for authenticity that is deemed as complete as necessary but as simple as possible. The model can be used by organizations or as a contribution to the discussion of authenticity and trustworthiness in digital archival descriptions.
This article presents the results of a documentary research regarding the current state of Organization and Representation of Musical Information (ORMI) in Portugal. Many authors describe the national scene of ORMI as very shortcoming, due to the usual difficulties: time vs. detail in the description and lack of knowledge of musical language by the technicians Information professionals. A survey of the monographs and articles as of 2011 that make a critical revision to the works of ORMI of several institutions was made, aiming to: 1) perceive their current state and 2) understand its strengths and weaknesses. We identified in these studies the analytic categories to create afterwards a classification structure by disciplinary areas, which shows semantic, structural and quality heterogeneity. The majority of Finding Aids are being produced by musicology projects with structures that respond to their information representation needs.
Este artigo procura compreender a relação entre a interoperabilidade tecnológica e semântica (metainformação) dos sistemas de informação com a sustentabilidade, proposta global da Agenda 2030 das Nações Unidas para o desenvolvimento das nossas sociedades. Através de uma revisão sistemática da literatura e de uma análise dos resultados, pretende-se perceber o contributo da organização da informação e da interoperabilidade para o incremento do desenvolvimento sustentável. Foram colocadas duas questões de investigação: Qual o papel dos sistemas interoperáveis no desenvolvimento ambiental, social e económico? De que forma a organização da informação e a interoperabilidade podem contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável? Os resultados mostram que a interoperabilidade é considerada como fundamental para o desenvolvimento sustentável, sobretudo na construção de sistemas de informação integrados e normalizados. O papel dos sistemas interoperáveis no desenvolvimento ambiental, social e económico é relevante, pois a organização da informação e a interoperabilidade contribuem, de forma indireta, mas decisiva, para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Viabilizam a permuta de informação, incentivam a construção de comunidades globais de prática e ultrapassam as limitações e os défices locais. Conclui-se que a organização da informação desempenha um papel crucial e transversal nos projetos, que visam implementar os objetivos do desenvolvimento sustentável.
This paper presents recent developments in Portuguese local archives' classification policies. Following several professional workgroups and reinforced with a political mandate, local administration archives are putting in practice a new knowledge organization approach through the development of a national Classification Plan for Local Administration (CPLA). New archival legislation is ready to be officialy published and its impact is expected to largely modify administration practices. The main objective of the study is to discuss the knowledge organization solutions embedded in the creation of CPLA. To achieve this goal, a literature review was performed, together with a project management approach, exploring a qualitative analysis of the problems and the solutions found during CPLA's design. The Functional Macrostructure for Public Administration information is the main framework for the development of CPLA, and contributes to the emergence of a new paradigm in Information Management. Such paradigm intersects functions with business processes, transversally and supra-institutionally, and considers the different public administration bodies as open systems. As an outcome, the public administration and, in particular, the archival community receive a new standardized information management tool that serves the classification, appraisal and selection of archival information.
