Este artigo investiga as relações entre a Bahia e a Costa da Mina no alvorecer da Segunda Escravidão (c. 1810-1831). Apesar do foco historiográfico no Sudeste e no tráfico para a África Centro-Ocidental, a região do Golfo do Benim, na África Ocidental, continuou um importante mercado negreiro atlântico. A partir de 1815, os traficantes baianos desenvolveram estratégias para burlar a repressão antitráfico inglesa. Ao mesmo tempo, os portos africanos de embarque se organizaram para suprir a demanda baiana por cativos. Discute-se a participação de africanos libertos no comércio atlântico ilegal. Embora sua participação seja mais visível a partir da década de 1830, eles já compunham a tripulação das embarcações negreiras como pequenos negociantes e utilizando redes comerciais transoceânicas.
