Use of Fine Gnaisse into Roofing Tiles Body ABSTRACTThis work has for objective to evaluate the effect of the replacing of sand by gnaisse sawing waste into a red ceramic body used for roofing tile fabrication. Specimens were then prepared by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa before firing at 850, 950 and 1050 o C in a laboratory furnace. The following properties were evaluated: plasticity, linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the use of gnaisse fines by replacing the sand did not change the workability of the body and promoted a significant increase on the mechanical strength of the fired ceramic. Keywords: Sand, red ceramic, reformulation, gnaisse fines.
Small‐scale mining, including quarry operations, continues to play an important social and economic role in hundreds of communities throughout Brazil. Often operating outside the formal economy, conflicts between the owners of small‐scale mining operations, the mineworkers, various government agencies, and other stakeholders have contributed to the progressive degradation of the environment, poor health and safety standards, and low productivity. The Centre for Mineral Technology (CETEM) of Brazil is implementing a consensus building methodology in order to produce dimension stone by small‐scale miners on a more sustainable basis in the Pádua region, located in the northwest of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The approach being used by CETEM is based on its own experience in working with gold prospectors in the Amazon, and lessons and experiences learned from Canadian officials and industry representatives. The lessons and insights gained from this project may prove to be useful to those involved in addressing similar problems elsewhere in Brazil, South America and around the world.
The effect of replacing sand for gnaisse sawing waste into a red ceramic body used for roofing tile fabrication was evaluated.
The Santo Antonio de Padua natural stone cluster in the state of Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the most successful small mining initiatives in Brazil, having seen the creation of around 150 small- and medium-sized companies operating quarries and stone saw mills. Initially used as corral flooring material, the natural stone was later used in large urban projects such as the Porto Maravilha, a project supported by the city of Rio de Janeiro to modernize the city port before the 2016 Olympic Games. Such a step forward was made possible by a multistakeholder approach that brought together local stone business representatives, government agencies, non-governmental institutions, and other authorities that supported a regional development plan stablishing natural stone production as a priority. This paper describes historical events associated with the development of the Padua stone cluster that may offer practical examples for similar initiatives worldwide.
NRF, A United Nations Sustainable Development Journal is running a special series over the 2009-2011 period on themes to be considered by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in its 18 th and 19 th sessions: chemicals, mining, sustainable consumption and production, transport, and waste management. In this issue, experts address the question: "How can revenues from natural resources extraction be more efficiently utilized for local sustainable development?" Implied in the question is an 'agency' that is in charge of receiving and, in turn, 'utilizing' the revenues for the local communities. In this formulation, the communities inhabiting the local geographical scale are seen as being 'acted upon' by this higher body; good is being done to them. This innocuous question, therefore, consolidates the undulating terrain of power before a dialogue can begin on a level-playing field. The question needs to be changed to: 'how can local communities utilise the natural resources to achieve sustainable developmental outcomes?' Such a formulation would not embed rent-seeking by extractive companiesmultinational or nationally owned-and the State. The local communities would not be stripped of ownership of resources, which happened historically during colonization often through enclosure. If I had to give a prescription a la 'What is to be done', I would advocate that mineral resources be co-managed with only a small portion of the revenues given to the national and other state agencies. In a number of other natural resources sectors, the local communities' ownership, interest and ability to manage have been recognised. Evidence is mounting that co-management yields more equitable and sustainable developmental outcomes. Imagining an alternative (and better) future would involve radically changing the current power superstructures, and a first step is to accept the local communities as rightful owners of resources and as resourceful enough to manage the revenues for themselves.
