ABSTRACTThe objective of this study map the landuse/landcover using IKONOS II data, automatize the delineation of permanent preservation areas and to identify landuse conflict based on the Brazilian Forest Code and Resolution nº 303 of CONAMA. The study was developed in the Alegre river watershed, located in the south region of the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil. Twelve landuse classes were mapped, along with the following permanent preservation areas: upper third of hills (49,7 ha); hillsides with slopes above 45 degrees (27,5 ha); springs and their respective contributing areas (1.975,6 ha); riparian zones with width less than 10 meters (2.818,3 ha); and upper third of sub-basins (4.695,8 ha), summing 9.566,9 ha (45.95%). The area of undue use corresponded to 7.499,7 ha (43,80%), with coffee plantation and pasture classes occupying most of this area (74.73%). Only 1.780,7 ha (18.61%) of permanent preservation areas are protected by native vegetation 7.786,2 ha (81.39%).Key words: permanent preservation area; geoprocessing; landuse.
Changes in the carbon stocks under different soil water and nutrient conditions were studied in Eucalyptus globulus Labill. stands in a field experiment, at Ó bidos (central Portugal). The treatments were irrigation plus a complete fertiliser solution to simulate 'near optimal' nutrition (IF), irrigation only (I), and fertilisers added to rain-fed plots (F). The control (C) received neither water nor fertilisers (except a small amount at planting). The production of biomass (aboveground), the litterfall and the soil chemical composition were evaluated regularly during the experiment. Root biomass was estimated at the end of the experiment. Carbon in biomass, litterfall and soil, increased significantly when water and/or nutrients were supplied, in comparison to the control. The amount of carbon accumulated in the system, 6 years after planting, was 8.22, 10.22, 11.23 and 13.76 kg C m À2 in the control, F, I and IF treatments, respectively. The increase of carbon in the system during the same period was 5.86, 7.86, 8.87 and 11.40 kg C m À2 in the control, F, I and IF treatments, respectively. This rise in carbon resulted from the accumulation of long-lived woody biomass, which represented between 77.7 (in IF) and 82.9% (in the control) of the total rise in carbon. Although water was the main limiting factor for biomass accumulation, the allocation of carbon to the soil was mainly related to nutrient supply, irrespective of water availability. The amount of carbon stored belowground, i.e. soil and forest floor, plus stumps and roots, reached 4.2, 4.7, 4.8 and 6.3 kg C m À2 in the control, F, I and IF treatments, respectively. The increase in C in the mineral soil regarding the initial state was, in the same order as above, 0.21, 0.75, 0.58 and 1.21 kg C m À2. These values were 3.6, 9.6, 6.6 and 10.6% of the C accumulated in the whole system, during the experimental period.
Palavras-chave: hidrologia florestal; manejo de bacias hidrográficas; nascentes; Eucalyptus sp. Hydrological and environmental diagnostic of the Cachoeira dasPombas's watershed, Guanhães, MG, Brazil ABSTRACTThe objective of this work was to evaluate hydrological and environmental issues of Cachoeira das Pombas watershed, in Guanhães, eastern Minas Gerais State, Brazil, to support its management plan. The characterization of water springs included the definition of its types, assessment of flow persistence, conservation state, outflow values, and the hydrological and environmental conservation state of the watershed. For a detailed analysis, the watershed was studied considering each of its small watersheds. Analyzing the hydrological and environmental conservation state of the watershed, it was concluded that an integrated management of natural resources is necessary inasmuch as the flow rate showed to be irregular, with great variation between the rainy and dry seasons and several erosion and silting spots observed during the study period.
The distribution along the soil profile of Eucalyptus globulus root biomass was followed in a plantation in central Portugal at 1, 2 and 6 years after planting, using an excavation technique. The experimental design consisted of a control (C) and 3 treatments: application of solid fertilizers twice a year (F), irrigation without the application of fertilizers (I) and irrigation combined with liquid fertilizers (IL). Below-and above-ground biomass decreased as follows: IL>I>F>C. So, water stress limited growth more severely than nutrient stress. The roots rapidly colonized the top soil volume (0-20 cm depth) during the first year after planting. Fine root biomass 6 years after planting was 2.2, 1.8 and 1.6 times higher in IL treatment than it was respectively in control, and in F and I treatments. The distribution of fine roots along the soil profile 6 years after planting was more even in IL compared to the other treatments. However, fine roots in the top soil were more concentrated along the tree rows in the irrigated treatments than in the others. The proportion of below-ground biomass relative to the total tree biomass and the root/shoot ratio were higher in C than in the treatments at early growth stages. This pattern was not so clear 6 years after planting, due to the increased proportion of the tap root relative to total biomass, especially in the IL treatment.
