O artigo enfoca aquilo que a literatura vem atualmente apontando acerca das necessidades de conhecermos ampla e profundamente o campo de pesquisa sobre formação de professores. Dentro desse escopo, o objetivo foi traçar um perfil métrico do campo brasileiro de pesquisas sobre formação de professores em Educação em Ciências, baseado em artigos de periódicos dessa área. Este trabalho é parte de uma extensa investigação sobre o tema, na qual utilizamos bases teórico-metodológicas da estatística descritiva, da bibliometria e da cienciometria. Nesta pesquisa foram analisados 406 artigos sobre formação de professores publicados nestes cinco periódicos brasileiros da área de Educação em Ciências, desde o primeiro número de cada um até o último de 2016: IENCI, Ciência & Educação, Ensaio, RBPEC e Alexandria. O conjunto de indicadores mostra que o referido campo mescla atributos próprios (e.g., tipo de literatura que o fundamenta; forte presença autoral feminina) e características que são compartilhadas com outros campos (e.g., distribuição da produtividade sobre um tema específico). As análises realizadas sugerem um perfil de pouca produção teórica e baixa autonomia epistêmica do campo de pesquisa sobre formação de professores em Educação em Ciências. Há nítida importação e uso de referenciais teórico-metodológicos de outros campos de pesquisas, notadamente da Educação, Filosofia e Psicologia.
