In the Brazilian Cerrado Biome, Latosols (Oxisols) predominate on gently sloping areas and are highly suitable for the development of mechanised agriculture. However, inappropriate management may lead to reduced crop yields and environmental degradation. We examined the relationships between compression behaviour and texture of Latosols to support decisions on the sustainable use and management of agricultural land. We collected soil samples in 10 Latosols with variable textures under native vegetation and determined the oxide content, bulk and particle density, total porosity, water retention curves, and preconsolidation pressure at different water potentials to develop preconsolidation pressure models. Our results showed that soil texture influenced soil physical properties, that is, an increase in the clay content enhanced the total porosity and water retention and decreased bulk density. Consequently, the susceptibility of these soils to compaction increased with an increase in the clay content. Considering the characteristics of the machinery used in intensive Brazilian agriculture, the compaction risk of these soils was considered high, despite the differences in resistance of the soils. In clayey and very clayey soils, some additional compaction is almost inevitable, even when the water content is low. Thus, caution is required in the evaluation of structural changes after mechanised field operations.
Spatial distribution of coffee roots and pores of two Latosols under conservationist management A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of management system employing soil conservation practices in the coffee root system distribution and in the structure of two Latosols after six years in the crop establishment in Alto São Francisco Valley, MG. Three random trenches were made lengthwise along the row planting (0.70 x 1.50 m) in a gibbsitic Latosol and a kaolinitc Latosol both under soil management system employing soil conservationist practices. The root system evaluation was done by crop profile methods and 2D image analyze, with subsequent surface mapping of the root variables analyzed by kriging. Intact soil cores were sampled for pore diameter distribution analysed by X-ray CT scan. The roots and pores were classified by diameter:1, > 1 and ≤ 3 and > 3 mm. The coffee root system in both soils under study on the same management system showed good branching in horizontal and vertical direction. The highest root concentration occurred at 0.20-0.34 m depth in kaolinitic Latosol. In gibbsitic Latosol the root distribution was uniform, especially in the vertical soil profile reaching greater depths. The highest occurrence of fine roots in the gibbsitic Latosol occurred at 0.80-0.94 m depth.Palavras-chave: morfologia radicular análise de imagem tomografia computada de raios-X krigagem Coffea arabica L. The management of perennial crops could encourage the improvement of the soil, making it more productive, provided that appropriate agronomic practices are adopted. In order to evaluate the structure of a Cerrado Latosol subjected to soil management that adopts the use of high doses of gypsum and brachiaria on the coffee plants interrow, we studied the stability of aggregates and total soil organic carbon after two years of deployment of coffee. Soil samples were collected at 5 and 15 cm of depth in the crop coffee row located in the Alto São Francisco region, Minas Gerais states. The treatments were: G-0, no gypsum on the row, G-7, 7.0 Mg ha-1 of gypsum distributed in the coffee row, G-28, 28 Mg ha-1 of gypsum distributed in the coffee row, G-56, 56 Mg ha-1 of gypsum distributed in the row, CV-0, conventional management without gypsum CV-0 conventional tillage without gypsum in the row and grasses between row Brachiaria sp. between rows of coffee plants. Chemical analyzes were performed to determine the cations K + , Ca +2 , Mg +2 , P, and Al +3 , total organic carbon and physical analysis of soil aggregate stability. It was determined the mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter of aggregates retained on sieves with diameters ranging from 4 to 0.105 mm. All treatments were found more than 90% of aggregates with a diameter >2 mm suggesting that the management adopted a positive influence soil aggregate stability. The total organic carbon were positive and significantly correlated with aggregation. The dose of gypsum 7 t ha-1 positively altered the aggregation of soil specially in the superficial layer (15 cm).
