O artigo investiga a fabulação artística e política de Aline Motta em A água é uma máquina do tempo (2022a). Apropriando-se de materiais de arquivo, sua linguagem se aproxima da “poesia por outros meios” (PERLOFF, 2013). Por outro lado, sua pesquisa sobre a própria linhagem, que se entrelaça com a história das vidas negras no Brasil, aponta para outros horizontes de invenção. Dialogando com reflexões de Leda Martins sobre o tempo espiralar, de Saidiya Hartman sobre fabulação crítica, e de Marylin Strathern sobre os estudos de parentescos na contemporaneidade, observamos como a artista performa uma fantasmalidade relacionada a sua genealogia matrilinear.
