Les couleurs du discours environnemental Le discours environnemental peut être vu comme un discours spécialisé émergent dans le sens où l'on voit des normes de communication et une terminologie stabilisée se mettre en place progressivement dans le domaine. Il peut être défini comme tout discours visant à contribuer à la préservation, la protection ou la régénération de l'environnement, qu'il s'agisse du discours d'un acteur dont l'activité principal est liée à l'environnement (par exemple, organisation non gouvernementale environnementale) ou de celui d'un acteur dont l'activité principale est autre (par exemple, entreprise communiquant sur sa stratégie environnementale). Le concept d'environnement semble appartenir à la catégorie de concepts dont la définition est controversée, ce que Walter Bryce Gallie nomme « an essentially contested concept » (1956) ; le discours à son sujet est traversé par des lignes idéologiques multiples. Il n'est donc pas surprenant, dans un tel domaine, que les termes de couleurs, avec leur « pouvoir d'évocation, leur liberté d'association, leur caractère rebelle » (Pastoureau, 2010, p. 216), soient particulièrement sollicités, comme si la politisation du discours lui avait donné des couleurs. Ce phénomène est notable dans les textes de communication de différents types d'organisation au Royaume-Uni : partis politiques, qui se saisissent de plus en plus des thèmes environnementaux, entreprises, pour lesquelles communiquer sur les questions environnementales est devenu une « ardente obligation » (Tixier, 2005, p. 327), organisations non gouvernementales (ONG), dont le rôle de communication est essentiel afin d'alerter sur les conséquences négatives de la crise environnementale. Le vert s'impose, naturellement, comme la couleur de l'environnement. Il faut commencer par expliquer ce rôle ; c'est le sujet de la première partie. Une analyse diachronique des termes de couleur utilisés dans les discours diffusés par une sélection de grandes organisations britanniques 1 de 2000 à 2012 est conduite dans la deuxième partie. Dans une troisième partie, les limites de l'hégémonie du vert sont évoquées et l'évolution possible du spectre des couleurs dans les discours sur l'environnement est envisagée.
