In a program of seed quality assurance, the evaluation of seed vigor is fundamental and necessary to the global production process outcome.
GERMINATION TEST WITH PACKGAING THE ROLLS OF PAPER IN PLASTIC SACKSABSTRACT -The germination test is performed in the laboratory under controlled environment aiming for complete and fast germination of the seed lot. During the germination test the substrate used must be kept moist to allow seed germination. Thus, the paper roll used needs to be kept in plastic bags to preserve the moisture required for germination. Excess of moisture may also affect seed germination, cause delay or paralyzation of seedling development. These modifications may give results that are not reliable, which do not represent the real quality of the seed lot. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the conditions of packaging the paper rolls in plastic sacks to optimize the results of the germination test carried out in a vertical B.O.D. type chamber. Two thickness of transparent plastic bags (0,033 mm and 0,050 mm) were evaluated and the presence or absence of perforation (128 holes of 5 mm diameter mm per size of 60 cm x 40 cm). The following species were used: sweet corn (cv. 'Doce Cristal' and cv. 'Super Doce'), bean (cv. 'Pérola' and cv.
The period of 21 days suggested by the Brazilian Rules for Seed Testing for the germination test of B. humidicola seeds seems too long for seed producing companies and laboratories since they depend on the results for decisions concerning the storage or the commercialization of the seed lots. So, the objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of getting germination results of B. humidicola seeds in a shorter period. The procedures consisted in submitting the seeds to a dormancy breaking treatment and to alternating temperatures during the germination test. Seed samples of nineteen S1 and S2 seed lots were submitted to the following treatments: moistening the germination substratum with 1) deionized water (check treatment), 2) a KNO 3 (0.2%) solution, and 3) scarifying the seeds with sulfuric acid for 10 minutes. The germination test was conducted under the conditions of 1) alternating temperatures of 20 and 35 °C and 2) alternating temperatures of 15 and 35 °C both with 8 hours of light. Normal seedlings were evaluated in daily countings. The results showed that the germination test of B. humidicola seeds may be carried out under alternating temperatures of 15 and 35 °C without breaking seed dormancy with a final evaluation of the germination 10 days after the sowing of the seeds. Key words: Dormancy. Forage grass. Pasture. Temperature.
The period for the germination test of Surinam grass seeds established by the Rules for Seeds Testing is 28 days, considered too lengthy by producers, venders, and seed analysis laboratories. So, the objective of this research was to evaluate the possibility of reducing the time for the germination test of Surinam grass seeds and to establish a method for dormancy breaking and the ideal temperature. Ten seed lots were submitted to the following treatments to overcome seed dormancy: control; substrate moistening with 0.2% KNO 3 ; and scarification with sulfuric acid (98% 36 N) for 15 minutes. After the treatments, the lots were submitted to seed water content, germination and tetrazolium tests. During the germination test, conducted with four replicates of 100 seeds per treatment for 28 days, two conditions of alternating temperatures (20-35 °C and 15-35 °C) with 8 hours of light were tested. Attempting to determine the test end date, daily counts of the number of normal seedlings were made and for each lot, treatment, and temperature, a growth curve for the evaluation of germination was adjusted. The segmented regression model parameter estimations were calculated for each treatment. The germination test of Braquiaria decumbens seeds may be evaluated in 12 days after sowing using alternating temperatures of 20-35 °C and without any treatment to overcome dormancy.Index terms: Brachiaria decumbens; dormancy overcoming; ideal temperature.
