In four horses (mares), the effect of atropine (1 mg/100 kg of body weight I. V.) and detomidine (4 mg/100 kg of body weight I. V.) on several electrolytes and other parameters in serum and urine was studied.A marked hyperglycaemia was noted in all cases; none of the investigated serum electrolytes, metabolites or enzyme concentrations changed significantly. An initial increase of PCV and RBC count was followed by a decrease.Increased production of urine accompanied by a significant increase in sodium excretion was noted in all mares. In two horses, small amounts of glucose could be detected in the urine. The arterial partial oxygen pressure showed a significant decrease, possibly due to the use of atropine.
The metabolic status of normal lactating cows and of cows suffering from abomasal dilatation was evaluated by examination of blood parameters and by determination of the fat and glycogen content in liver biopsies. The method for examination of the liver biopsies is described. In clinically normal lactating cows the liver contains less than 20 mg triglycerides (TG) and more than 20 mg glycogen per gram of wet tissue. Cows suffering from abomasal displacement all showed hyperglycemia and in most of them a fatty to very fatty liver was found. The degree of hyperglycemia depends on the amount of liver glycogen and is independent of the liver TG content. The degree of ketonemia also depends on the liver glycogen content.
Summary Weaning implies to the piglets the transition from a liquid diet (milk) to a dry diet (meal). Therefore the influence of this change on post‐weaning intestinal morphology was examined. One group of piglets was weaned on a liquid diet and a second group was weaned conventionally. Bacteriological, virological and light and scanning electron microscopic examination was performed on distal jejunal and ileal samples taken at different days post‐weaning. A significant decrease in villus height was found in the piglets weaned on a dry diet on days 8 and 11 post‐weaning, whereas in the piglets receiving a liquid diet villus heights remained quite stable. Bacteriological and virological examination did not reveal any differences between the two groups.
Animals with abomasal displacement showed higher basal blood glucose levels than control animals independent of their ketotic status. Glucose clearance after an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was delayed in these patients despite a high and long lasting insulin response.Attention was drawn to urinary glucose losses after IVGTT in cows, due to the low renal threshold. This causes an overestimation of glucose halflife of about 20 % during the hyperglycaemic period.
Summary In five experimental mares, the influences of xylazine in the standing horse and as a premedication before a standard halothane anaesthesia of one and a half hours, on several ionary parameters in the serum and urine was studied in order to explain the decrease of the total serum calcium concentration found during halothane anaesthesia with xylazine for premedication. Xylazine had no influence on total calcium, ionized and complexed calcium, sodium and potassium serum concentrations. It caused marked diuresis, together with moderate calcium, sodium and potassium urinary excretions. Wide individual differences were found. The urinary creatinine excretion remained constant during the induced diuresis. During halothane anaesthesia, with xylazine for premedication. the initial diuresis was usually quickly reversed due to depression of renal blood flow caused by the inhalation anaesthesia, with even strong oliguria in two horses. No important losses of calcium, sodium and potassium were found after the initial diuresis had diminished. We conclude that the decrease in total calcium concentration in serum during halothane anaesthesia with xylazine for premedication cannot be explained by an increased urinary calcium excretion.
