Since the discovery of oestrogens in the early 1920s (Allen and Doisy, 1923), their effects have intrigued reproductive biologists. Classically, two approaches have been used to study the role of oestrogen within the ovary: surgical removal of the pituitary gland to eliminate confounding gonadotrophins, and pharmacological blockage of either the synthesis of oestrogen or its receptors both in vivo and in vitro.
