-Litterfall is the first phase of the biogeochemical cycle and returns nutrients to the soil. This paper demonstrates the quantitative distribution of the different components throughout the year in four stands of a beech time sequence. Litterfall increases as the forest evolves and as basal area increases: from 2.1 t/ha/an in the thicket to 4.7 t/ha/an in the mature high forest. Leaves represent 90% of the total litterfall in the young stand and 70% in the oldest stand. The proportion of leaves decreases during forest rotation. Most of the categories are related to the age and basal area, because of the architecture and maturity of the trees. Other factors could explain litterfall dynamics, e.g. human management or animals. Climate is a preponderant factor for the litterfall production and plays a role in the species phenology. Cet article présente la répartition quantitative, par compartiment, au cours de deux ans de suivi et dans quatre peuplements de hêtre d'une chronoséquence. Les retombées totales de litière augmentent avec l'âge de la parcelle et la surface terrière : de 2,1 t/ha/an dans le fourré à 4,7 t/ha/an dans la vieille futaie. Les feuilles représentent 90 % des retombées totales dans le jeune peuplement et 70 % dans la parcelle âgée. La proportion de feuilles diminue au cours de la chronoséquence. La plupart des catégories sont reliées à l'âge et à la surface terrière, par l'intermédiaire de l'architecture et de la maturité du peuplement. D'autres facteurs peuvent expliquer la dynamique des retombées: la sylviculture, les animaux. Le climat est un facteur prépondérant dans la production de litière et a un rôle également sur la phénologie des espèces. Summary Changes in soil and biogeochemical processes following the replacement, 60 years ago, of part of a deciduous forest by a coniferous stand were evaluated by (i) a balance‐sheet approach using soil and biomass element content analyses and the mineral flux, and (ii) the inclusion of test‐mineral and resin bags in an integrative experimental approach. The comparison of soils under different stands shows that the change to spruce is inducing physical, chemical and biological modifications in soil properties. Changes in the humus layers lead to a reduction in mineralization and the mobilization of active organic acids in the system. Under spruce, the soil structural stability is reduced as fine clay is dispersed. Soil acidification is increased, linked to a decrease in soil pH and desaturation of the soil exchange complex. Soil mineralogy also indicates this tendency, particularly with an increase in the stability of Al intergrades. The biogeochemical cycle is modified especially for N, S and Al. with large changes in the internal fluxes between the ecosystem components, but the modification of the input‐output balance due to spruce introduction is large only for S. The acidification is partly due to a change in litter quality, which inhibits biological activity, and partly because, during the dormant season, evergreen species intercept ‘dry and occult’ depositions from the atmosphere containing acidic or potentially acidic components. Use of test‐mineral bags improves understanding and interpretation of the current soil mechanisms. The test mineral, a vermiculite, introduced into the soil or placed in the lysimeter flux very quickly undergoes measurable transformation characterized by desaturation and fixation of non‐exchangeable Al in the interlayer zone, easily identified by Al speciation. The acidifying effect of spruce is clearly demonstrated by the experimental approach used, including the characterization of soil solutions by resin bags. All the techniques are complementary and could be used together or individually, depending on the aim of the study.

Abstract• Liming is a forestry practice used to counteract forest decline in acidic soils. It consists of direct Ca and Mg input to forest soil, which restores tree mineral nutrition, but also modifies microbial communities in soil. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of liming on both belowground (ectomycorrhizal root tips) and aboveground (epigeous sporocarps) fungal communities.• Results showed that the modification of soil chemical properties (pH, and Ca-Mg contents versus total free Al and Fe concentrations) was a stronger factor of ECM community structuring than tree host. The species appearing in limed plots were ubiquist or known as good competitors and replaced acidophilic and stress species.• At the sporocarp level, tree host was a stronger factor of community structuring than soil chemical properties associated with liming. On the whole, there was a shift in the community composition from a typical acidophilic forest fungal community of medium altitude in the untreated plots to a less typical one, with the reduced dominance of acidophilic fungi while many late-stage forest species appeared.• We finally suggest a marker species (Russula ochroleuca) to assess both above and belowground effects of liming on ectomycorrhizal communities. Il consiste en un apport direct de Ca et Mg au sol forestier, ce qui restaure la nutrition minérale de l'arbre, mais aussi modifie les communautés microbiennes du sol. Cette étude évalue les effets du chaulage sur les communautés fongiques hypogées (apex ectomycorrhiziens : « ECM ») et épigées (carpophores).• Les résultats montrent que la modification des des propriétés chimiques du sol (pH et concentrations en Ca-Mg échangeables versus concentrations en Al et Fe échangeables) est un facteur de structuration de la communauté d'ECMs plus fort que l'arbre hôte. Les espèces qui sont apparues dans les placeaux chaulés sont ubiquistes ou compétitrices et ont remplacé des espèces acidophiles ou connues pour être associées à des conditions de stress.• Concernant les carpophores, l'arbre hôte est un facteur de structuration de la communauté plus fort que les propriétés chimiques du sol associées au chaulage. Dans l'ensemble, on a observé une modification de la communauté fongique, passant d'une communauté typique de forêt acide de moyenne altitude dans les placeaux témoins vers une autre moins spécifique, caractérisée par une moindre dominance d'espèces acidophiles et l'apparition de nombreuses espèces de forêt mature.• Nous suggérons enfin une espèce marqueur (Russula ochroleuca) qui permet d'évaluer facilement les effets du chaulage sur les communautés de champignons mycorrhiziens, aussi bien du point de vue des apex mycorrhiziens que des carpophores.

Les Ardennes primaires ont des sols réputés pauvres, c'est peut-être une des raisons pour laquelle le taux de boisement est élevé (68 %). L'aire climacique est celle du Luzulo-Fagetum. La forêt décidue est souvent un taillis-sous-futaie à faible production moyenne [5 m 3 /ha/an (Ranger, 1981 ; Bouchon, 1985)] en relation avec une surexploitation passée du taillis comme ressource énergétique pour l'industrie métallurgique locale. Depuis la fin du siècle dernier, l'Épicéa commun a été introduit pour reboiser les landes, les fagnes et surtout pour les reconversions des mauvais taillis dont les débouchés, en tant que bois de feu, disparaissaient (Hureaux, 1986). La production moyenne à 50 ans de cet Épicéa commun, sur les sols correctement drainés, varie de 7 à 10 m 3 /ha/an. Sur des sols aussi pauvres chimiquement, il semblait possible d'augmenter la production du peuplement par l'usage d'une fertilisation. Ce fut l'objectif initial d'un essai de fertilisation mis en place en 1980 à La Croix-Scaille sur le plateau ardennais.

A mica was inserted into the soil at four sites to try to identify, in situ, the physico-chemical changes in the soil caused by the introduction of different tree species, and especially conifers. Changes in the chemistry and mineralogy of the mixed-layered mica, micachlorite, vermiculite, after If and 3f years in the soil, showed good differentiation between soil horizons and between soil types. Differences due to tree species were present, but small. The mechanisms of mineral evolution can be defined with reference to experimental data obtained in the laboratory. In litter layers, the mica-chlorite sheet was transformed into a mica-vermiculite, and exchangeable cations predominated on the exchange sites. In the organo-mineral horizons, changes varied depending on the soil type: in the podzol, transformation was similar to that in the litter layers, but in the sol brun acide, changes were dominated by the Al fixation on the exchange sites and its rapid hydroxylation which blocks these sites, leading to the formation of A1 intergrade minerals.Different tree species produced deviations linked to their ability to cycle cations, and also to the different organic materials produced which can attack the mineral.The method has the potential to define the present soil environment and weathering processes, but it needs a more complete experimental design and the use of statistics to clarify the effects of the parameters and their interactions.
