Sections from 414 breast cancers were examined in order to estimate the frequency and grade of elastosis. The incidence of elastosis was correlated to age, different types of tumor, and, regarding ductal carcinoma, the grade of differentiation. Except for a shift to higher incidence over the age of 40, no positive correlation between increasing age and frequency or grade o f elastosis was found. Moderately differentiated ductal carcinoma showed elastosis in 69.996, and poorly differentiated in 63.1%. T h e incidence in 28 lobular carcinomas was 64.3%. Sections from ductal carcinomas with elastosis were treated with elastase and, subsequently, no elastin could be demonstrated. An amyloid-like material was left in areas where elastosis was seen in control sections. Senile elastosis reacted in a similar way to enzyme digestion, but, in other respects, a tinctorial divergency between mammary and skin elastosis was tound. T h e possible significance of elastosis in breast cancer is briefly d isciissed.KEAST CARCINOAIAS I N FEMALES OFTEN CON-
Summary In two families with five and three children respectively, two of the children in each family died of renal diseases with a very similar course. They fell ill manifesting fatigue, anemia, slowly increasing polyuria, polydipsia and, gradually, isosthenuria. In the urine, a very insignificant amount of protein was noted, or none at all, and the sediment showed nothing pathologic. There was hardly any increase in the blood pressure. The nonprotein nitrogen slowly increased and the children died of uremia. In three autopsy cases, the renal changes are practically identical, showing a symmetric and diffuse contraction with severe damage to the glomerules as well as to the tubules. The histologic picture is characterized by sheath‐like, thickened basal membranes, a large number of hyalinized glomerules, a variation of atrophic and hypertrophic tubules, areas with a thyroid‐like appearance, and a pronounced fibrosis together with an infiltration of round cells. The structure seems to conform, in principle, to that described by Fanconi et al. In the opinion of the present authors, these cases are identical with the so‐called familial juvenile nephronophthisis. Nephronophthisie juvenile familiale.
