En se promenant dans le centre des grandes villes françaises, force est de constater que les bijoux touaregs sont à la mode. Ils bénéficient de l'engouement pour « l'ethnique » qui sévit depuis quelques années dans toute l'Europe occidentale. Nous achetons des bijoux touaregs parce qu'ils nous plaisent, et dans certains cas, parce que nous les trouvons beaux, au même titre que les Touaregs trouvent beaux certains des modèles vendus en Europe, et vont chercher à se les procurer. 2En poussant la logique de ce raisonnement, nous serions tentés de conclure que Touaregs et Européens partagent, au moins sur certains points, les mêmes conceptions esthétiques parce qu'ils apprécient les mêmes bijoux. Lorsque deux groupes, culturellement distincts, se rejoignent sur l'appréciation portée à un objet, s'agit-il ou non d'une coïncidence ?
Dans la plupart des sociétés traditionnelles africaines ou méditerranéennes, les forgerons occupent une place à part et sont souvent redoutés et parfois méprisés. Ce fut longtemps le cas chez les Berbères du Maghreb ou du Sahara. E. Doutté écrit qu'en Algérie les forgerons sont dits, encore au début du XX e siècle, Beni Niyat et forment un groupe en dehors de la société ; ils sont méprisés au point que "haddad ben haddad "(forgeron fils de forgeron) est une injure. Cependant l'emploi du fer industriel qui commençait à se généraliser en Algérie faisait multiplier le nombre des travailleurs des métaux et contribuait à faire disparaître ce préjugé. C'est en Grande Kabylie que le métier de forgeron et d'armurier connut son plein épanouissement. Nous empruntons à Hanoteau et Letourneux (1893)l'essentiel de leur description des Hadades. Dans la plupart des tribus kabyles on trouve, en cette fin du XIX e siècle, quelques ouvriers du fer. Les uns sont des maréchaux ferrants, les autres, de vrais forgerons fabriquant et réparant les instruments agricoles tels que socs d'araire (tagwerra), les haches à deux tranchants (amentas), les faucilles (amger) et la pioche-hachette si caractéristique du pays kabyle (agelzim). Ces forgerons étaient, en général, mal outillés et les produits de leur travail s'en ressentaient. Chez les Aït Boudrar, les Aït Ouassif, les Iflissen et surtout les Aït Yenni, il existait de bons ouvriers dont l'art était plus perfectionné. Hanoteau et Letourneux ont donné de précieux renseignements sur leur outillage et leurs procédés de fabrication.
