Walker poplar has proven superior to other poplar clones in Saskatchewan with respect to growth and resistance to disease. This poplar has been widely planted on the Canadian Prairies as a shelterbelt tree.
Schroeder, W., Soolanayakanahally, R. and Lindquist, C. 2013. Okanese poplar. Can. J. Plant Sci. 93: 1281–1283. Okanese poplar is a male, winter-hardy and drought-resistant hybrid poplar tree released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), Agroforestry Development Centre (ADC) for the Canadian prairies and United States northern Great Plains. Okanese is named for the Cree Chief Okanis founding chief of Okanese First Nation located in the File Hills area of southern Saskatchewan.
Pollen of Picea pungens Engelm. appeared to modify the pH of aqueous cultural solutions. Superior pollen germination of 97% and tube growth of 223 μ was recorded on a 1.5% agar medium with 10% sucrose and a pH of 4. Pollen viability was 78% after one year in open storage at 4 °C and 82% after two years in sealed storage at −18 °C.
Several storage treatments at 20°C and -5OC were evaluated by late spring transplantings for fall and spring lifted 2-0 seedlings of Pinus sylvestris L. and Picea pungens Engelm. Survival and growth of the 2-2 transplants for both \ species, after overwinter or early spring storage at 2OC as bare-root plants in sealed 4-ml poly bags, equalled the performances of freshly-lifted seedlings. Both of these treatments proved practical and efficient alternatives for delayed spring transplantings.
Rooting of cuttings was 82% after overwinter storage at -2OC, 73% after + 2OC storage, and only 60% after being heeled-in outdoors. Budbreak after planting was earliest for the heeled-in cuttings and latest for those refrigerated at -2OC, but length of the subsequent top growth was similar for all storage treatments.
