Monitoring for respiratory depression is essential during conscious sedation. We report a case of a squamous papilloma as an unusual cause of intermittent partial airway obstruction in a 43-year-old man undergoing intravenous conscious sedation with midazolam. The Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI) is an algorithm included in some commercially available monitors that constitutes a representation of 4 parameters: end-tidal carbon dioxide, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and pulse rate. We discuss the potential of the IPI as a monitoring tool during sedation.
Dental anxiety is common and frequently poses a barrier to necessary dental treatment. The increasing availability of conscious sedation in dental practice has made treatment much more accessible for anxious patients. At present, benzodiazepines are the most commonly used drugs in sedation practice and provide a pleasant experience for most, but not all, patients. An understanding of the mechanism of action of benzodiazepines should inform our practice and deepen our understanding of why and how sedation may fail. CPD/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: As an increasing number of dentists provide sedation for their patients an update on benzodiazepines is timely.
Aim: This article aims to provide some useful information on implementing capnography monitoring and interpretation in an oral surgery setting. Materials and Methods: Information gleaned from experience in the use of microstream capnography for patients undergoing conscious sedation is presented.
