Das Deutsche Museum beherbergt in seinen Sondersammlungen den wissenschaftlichen Nachlaß des Wegbereiters der Makromolekularchemie, Hermann Staudinger [1]. Dieser sehr umfangreiche Bestand an Briefen und Notizen liefert ein aufschlußreiches Bild der Anfänge der Polymerenforschung in Freiburg und ihrer Begründung als eigenständige Fachdisziplin. Im folgenden sollen die wichtigsten Phasen dieser Entwicklung dokumentiert werden, wobei hauptsächlich Briefe als Quellen dienen.
Eine Unterteilung des Gesamtzeitraumes in einzelne Abschnitte erleichtert die Übersicht ‐ zunächst die Berufung Staudingers nach Freiburg, die gekennzeichnet ist durch politisch motivierte Vorbehalte gegenüber seiner Person, anschließend die ersten Versuche zur Schaffung eines eigenen Forschungsinstituts für makromolekulare Chemie und die Behelligungen, die Staudinger von seiten des NS‐Regimes erlebte. Schließlich die Gründung einer „Forschungsabteilung”︁ im Jahr 1940 und die weitgehende Zerstörung des chemischen Instituts gegen Kriegsende. Die letzte hier betrachtete Phase umfaßt den Wiederaufbau des chemischen Instituts, die Versuche Staudingers zur Gründung eines Max‐Planck‐Instituts, die Schaffung eines staatlichen Forschungsinstituts und die mit seiner Emeritierung und seinem späteren Rücktritt von der Leitung des makromolekularen Forschungsinstituts verbundenen Ereignisse.
Neben der Darstellung der spezifischen Entwicklung der polymerchemischen Forschung in Freiburg erlauben die Archivalien auch einen Einblick in die sich wandelnde Situation der deutschen Hochschulforschung in der Zeit von Weimar bis zur Frühphase der Bundesrepublik.
