Abstract: Das Deutsche Museum beherbergt in seinen Sondersammlungen den wissenschaftlichen Nachlaß des Wegbereiters der Makromolekularchemie, Hermann Staudinger [1]. Show more

“…After the First World War, in the admittedly democratic but still very patriotic Weimar Republic, the reaction to such little national pride—and that from neutral Switzerland—was not long in the coming. When he wanted to move from the ETH Zürich to the Universität Freiburg (Germany) in 1926, Staudinger was ordered by the dean in Freiburg to comment officially on his appeal of 1917 to remove suspicions of his patriotic stance63—and he did.…”

“…His attitude in the Third Reich was for the sake of his research and retaining his research group. Thus, to be able to travel to conferences abroad, he made offers to the university management to represent German science abroad, to defend his “German” macromolecules against those that had meanwhile become “Jewish” polymers 63. 65 If Hermann Staudinger had held to his pacifist stance of the First World War to only the slightest extent he could not have become editor of the renowned German Journal für praktische Chemie in 1939, he would not have been allowed to found the first European institute for macromolecular chemistry in Freiburg in 1940, and he would not have been able to rename his journal the Journal für Mackromolekulare Chemie in 1943 66.…”
