Esta tese foi dividida em 4 capítulos: 1) Influência do intervalo desmame estro sobre a duração de Estro e o momento da ovulação de pluríparas suínas e seu uso como base de um programa de inseminação artificial; 2) Intervalo entre a inseminação e a ovulação e desempenho reprodutivo de pluríparas suínas submetidas a uma ou duas inseminações artificiais por dia; 3) Desempenho reprodutivo de fêmeas suínas submetidas ou não a inseminações artificiais pós-ovulatórias e 4) Cistos ovarianos e suas conseqüências no desempenho reprodutivo de rebanhos suínos. Para a realização do primeiro capítulo, foram conduzidos 6 experimentos, em 2 granjas, quando foram observadas 3291 pluríparas suínas, com o objetivo de avaliar a relação entre o intervalo desmame estro com a duração de estro e o momento da ovulação e a possibilidade do uso do intervalo desmame estro como preditor do momento da ovulação. O intervalo desmame estro influenciou a duração de estro em quase todas as avaliações, embora as associações observadas entre essas variáveis tenham sido fracas. O mesmo ocorreu com a associação do intervalo desmame estro com o momento da ovulação. Devido à grande variabilidade do momento da ovulação, não é possível observar uma associação forte com o intervalo desmame estro. Uma mesma granja pode apresentar comportamento estral diferenciado quanto ao intervalo entre o desmame e o estro em diferentes momentos. Para a realização do capítulo 2 foram avaliadas 2230 pluríparas suínas submetidas a uma ou duas inseminações artificiais diárias. As fêmeas estavam alojadas em duas granjas, que foram observadas em dois momentos cada. Foram avaliados o comportamento estral, desempenho reprodutivo, intervalo entre a inseminação e a ovulação e o número de inseminações pósovulatórias com o uso de cada estratégia. O uso de uma inseminação diária reduziu em pelo menos 0,92 doses inseminante por estro. A duração de estro, momento da ovulação, taxa de retorno ao estro e taxa de parto ajustada não foram influenciados pelo número de inseminações recebidas diariamente. O tamanho de leitegada foi influenciado em somente uma das avaliações, sendo menor nas fêmeas que receberam inseminações com intervalo de 24 horas. A redução no número de inseminações diárias causou um aumento no intervalo entre a inseminação e a ovulação. A freqüência de inseminações não promoveu diferenças na percentagem de fêmeas que receberam todas as inseminações antes da ovulação, mas aumentou o número de inseminações pós-ovulatórias recebidas. Para o capítulo 3, foram analisadas 1298 fêmeas suínas de duas granjas, com o objetivo de determinar a percentagem de fêmeas que receberam uma ou mais inseminações pós-ovulatórias e seus efeitos sobre o desempenho reprodutivo. Foi observado que mais de 70% das fêmeas receberam pelo menos uma inseminação pós-ovulatória e, aproximadamente 20% receberam duas ou mais.
