Abstract-A systematic method to improve the quality ( ) factor of RF integrated inductors is presented in this paper. The proposed method is based on the layout optimization to minimize the series resistance of the inductor coil, taking into account both ohmic losses, due to conduction currents, and magnetically induced losses, due to Eddy currents. The technique is particularly useful when applied to inductors in which the fabrication process includes integration substrate removal. However, it is also applicable to inductors on low-loss substrates. The method optimizes the width of the metal strip for each turn of the inductor coil, leading to a variable strip-width layout. The optimization procedure has been successfully applied to the design of square spiral inductors in a silicon-based multichip-module technology, complemented with silicon micromachining postprocessing. The obtained experimental results corroborate the validity of the proposed method. A factor of about 17 have been obtained for a 35-nH inductor at 1.5 GHz, with values higher than 40 predicted for a 20-nH inductor working at 3.5 GHz. The latter is up to a 60% better than the best results for a single strip-width inductor working at the same frequency.Index Terms-Inductor layout optimization, integrated RF inductor, silicon micromachining for RF applications, silicon RFIC's.
An intercomparison is undertaken of the tropical behavior of 17 coupled ocean-atmosphere models in which at least one component may be termed a general circulation model (GCM). The aim is to provide a taxonomy--a description and rough classification-of behavior across the ensemble of models, focusing on interannual variability. The temporal behavior of the sea surface temperature (SST) field along the equator is presented for each model, SST being chosen as the primary variable for intercomparison due to its crucial role in mediating the coupling and because it is a sensitive indicator of climate drift. A wide variety of possible types of behavior are noted among the models. Models with substantial interannual tropical variability may be roughly classified into cases with propagating SST anomalies and cases in which the SST anomalies develop in place. A number of the models also exhibit significant drift with respect to SST climatology. However, there is not a clear relationship between climate drift and the presence or absence of interannual oscillations. In several cases, the mode of climate drift within the tropical Pacific appears to involve coupled feedback mechanisms similar to those responsible for El Nifio variability. Implications for coupled-model development and for climate prediction on seasonal to interannual time scales are discussed. Overall, the results indicate considerable sensitivity of the tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere system and suggest that the simulation of the warm-pool/cold-tongue configuration in the equatorial Pacific represents a challenging test for climate model parameterizations.
A film of gas sensitive ZnO nanoparticles has been coupled with a low-power micro light plate (μLP) to achieve a NO 2 -parts-per-billion conductometric gas sensor operating at room temperature. In this μLP configuration, an InGaN-based LED (emitting at 455 nm) is integrated at a few hundred nanometers distance from the sensor material, leading to sensor photoactivation with well controlled, uniform, and high irradiance conditions, and very low electrical power needs. The response curves to different NO 2 concentrations as a function of the irradiance displayed a bell-like shape. Responses of 20% to 25 ppb of NO 2 were already observed at irradiances of 5 mWatts•cm −2 (applying an electrical power as low as 30 μW). In the optimum illumination conditions (around 60 mWatts•cm −2 , or 200 μW of electric power), responses of 94% to 25 ppb were achieved, corresponding to a lower detection limit of 1 ppb of NO 2 . Higher irradiance values worsened the sensor response in the partsper-billion range of NO 2 concentrations. The responses to other gases such as NH 3 , CO, and CH 4 were much smaller, showing a certain selectivity toward NO 2 . The effects of humidity on the sensor response are also discussed.
