ÖzBu araştırmada "Sosyal Onay İhtiyacı Ölçeği" geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen Sosyal Onay İhtiyacı Ölçeği'nin psikometrik özelliklerini belirlemek için 2013-2014 öğretim yılı Bahar Dönemi'nde Amasya Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören 100 üniversite öğrencisine ön uygulama yapılmış ve daha sonra da 360 üniversite öğrencisinden elde edilen verilere açımlayıcı faktör analizi yapılmıştır. 265 üniversite öğrencisinden elde edilen verilere de doğrulayıcı faktör analizi uygulanmıştır. Açımlayıcı faktör analizi sonucu ölçekle ilgili olarak üç alt boyuttan oluşan bir yapı bulunmuştur. Ölçeğin üç boyutunun toplam varyansın %45'ini açıkladığı görülmüştür. Bu üç boyuttan ilki, başkalarının yargılarına duyarlılık, ikinci alt boyutu sosyal geri çekilme, üçüncü alt boyutu olumlu izlenim bırakma olarak adlandırılmıştır. Ölçekten alınan puanların yüksekliği sosyal onay ihtiyacının yükseldiğini göstermektedir. Ölçeğe uygulanan doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonuçları ölçeğin üç alt boyutlu yapısını doğrulamıştır (x²/sd= 2. AbstractIn this study, "The Need For Social Approval Scale" was developed. In order to identify the psychometric features of the Need For Social Approval Scale, a pilot study was carried out with 100 students at Amasya University, Faculty of Education, and then exploratory factor analysis was applied to the data obtained from 360 university students. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied to the data obtained from 265 university students. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, a structure of three sub-dimensions was found out. It was seen that three dimensions of the scale explain 45% of the total variance. The first of those dimensions is named as sensitivity to others' judgments, the second is social withdrawal, and the third is leaving a good impression. High scores in the scale show the increase of the need for social approval.
The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between need for approval and loneliness and depression in university students. The second purpose of the current study is to examine depression, need for social approval and loneliness in relation to some demographic variables. The study was conducted on a total of 249 students (175 females and 74 males) attending the Education Faculty of a university located in the Central Black Sea Region. The current study employed a personal information form, the Beck Depression Inventory, the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Need for Social Approval Scale to collect data. In order to determine the correlations between depression, loneliness and need for social approval “multiple regression analysis”; in order to determine between-groups differences, “t-test” and “variance analysis” were used. The findings of the study have revealed that loneliness and need for social approval explains 22% of the total variance in depression. In terms of contribution to the model, loneliness was found to be a better predictor of depression than the need for social approval. Depression, loneliness and the need for approval were found to be not varying significantly depending on gender. Only need for social approval was found to be varying significantly depending on both the mother’s and the father’s education level. The findings are discussed focusing on the relationship between loneliness and the need for social approval and depression in university students.
The reflection of the presence or absence of social relationships as a basic human need on the individual has been investigated in different ways. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the mediation role of social anxiety in the relationship between the need for social approval and happiness. A total of 285 students, of whom 212 (74.4%) are females and 73 (25.6%) are males, participated in the study. In the study, a Personal Information Form, the Social Anxiety Scale developed by Özbay and Palancı [1] the Need for Social Approval Scale developed by Karaşar and Öğülmüş [2] and the Oxford Happiness Scale adapted by Doğan and Sapmaz [3] were used to collect data. Whether the mediation role of social anxiety in the relationship between the need for social approval and happiness is statistically significant was investigated through the software program developed by Hayes [4,5], the approach based on the ordinary least square method and the bootstrap method. As a result of the study, it can be argued that social anxiety plays a mediation role in the relationship between the need for social approval and happiness. Moreover, it was found that the whole model was at a significant level and happiness explains 27% of the total variance. The findings of the study were discussed in such a way as to shed light on further research and practitioners.
The aim of the this research is to investigate university students narcissism and social approval. The participants of this study, consisted of 248 undergraduate students (178 girls; 70 boys). This study, Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory-Short Form and The Need for Social Approval Scale were used to collect data. The Five Factor Narcissism Scale-Short Form was developed by Glover et al. (2012). The short-form of the 60-item scale was developed by Sherman et al. (2015). Ekşi (2016) adapted the Turkish version. The Need for Social Approval Scale was developed by Karaşar and Öğülmüş (2016). SPSS / WINDOWS 20 program was used in the research. In order to analyse the relationships between the social approval and narcissism correlation analysis were used. Also to assign differences between groups variance analysis and t test were used. According to the results, it was found that there was a significant positive and moderate relationships between the need for social approval with vulnarable narcissism. It was not found that there was a significant relationships between the need for social approval with grandiose narcissism. The study reveals that there is no statistically significant difference of age, sex, parents' level of education to narcissism and social approval. The social approval differs in terms of the two dimensions of narcissism. At the same time, this finding of this research seems to be important in that it shows that narcissists may differ social approval. Considering the results of this research, the relationship between the social approval and narcissism can be investigated in different samples in the following studies. In addition, further research can be done with narcissism, social approval and different variables.
