Using data from a New York Times poll conducted in 2000, we analyze whites' approval of interracial marriage by examining the contexts in which whites have contact with blacks. The contexts can be ordered by the type of contact they provide, from close and personal to distant or hierarchical. The results of our analysis show that the type of contact engendered by a variety of contexts is important in determining attitudes toward interracial marriage. The contacts in most of the social settings are associated with friendship; the contexts are related to approval of interracial marriage even when friendship, age, gender, income, political party, and region are included in the analysis.

The present study compared a sample of American adolescents with a Spanish sample on a measure of video game addiction, the Problem Video Game Playing (PVP) survey developed in Spain. In addition, the study examined excessive video game playing and reported distress in social life, occupational activities, and school among high school students, college students, and adults. Samples taken from a large Eastern university, two suburban high schools, and an Internet survey were surveyed with an instrument developed by the authors and the PVP. Results show support for the PVP and a similarity between the Spanish and American samples but not for relationships between the PVP and assessments of distress in areas of daily functioning.

For a variety of reasons, there is little systematic evidence about African American attitudes about interracial marriage. National data are often sparse or not available, and they are often dated. Using a Year 2000 nationally representative poll from The New York Times, we analyze African American approval of interracial marriage. The sample comprised 934 African Americans. Eighty-five percent say they approve of interracial marriage. Education, sex, age, and region are significantly related to approval in the bivariate analyses. Analysis of the amount of contact or friendship African Americans have with Whites appears to be a critical variable affecting attitudes about intergroup marriage; the effects of most of the other variables become nonsignificant when friendship is included in the analysis.

We examine why buy-side analysts share investment ideas on SumZero.com, a private social networking website designed to facilitate interaction and information sharing among buy-side professionals. We first document that our sample of more than 1,000 buy-side analysts issue recommendations that have investment value. In particular, recommendations generate significant returns when they are posted to the website and the returns to both buy and sell recommendations drift in the direction of the recommendation. These returns are the most dramatic for contrarian recommendations (i.e., those issued contrary to the sell-side consensus). We explore labor-market motivations for sharing information and document that analysts who have strong incentives to seek new jobs (those at small funds), are significantly more likely to issue recommendations. We also show that analysts who share investment ideas are more likely to change jobs, and that the ratings their recommendations receive are positively related to changing employment. Overall, we show that social networking is an effective reputation building and job seeking tool for buy-side analysts.
