O artigo tem como objetivo investigar a construção do diagnóstico de loucura epidêmica, produzido em torno da epidemia de abasia coreiforme propagada no subúrbio de Itapagipe, em Salvador, no ano de 1882, defendido pelo médico maranhense Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (1862-1906). Tratava-se de uma disfunção cerebral que causava movimentos involuntários nos membros inferiores quando os enfermos andavam em marcha. Seu caráter epidêmico, defendiam os estudos, era atribuído ao contágio por imitação. Com base na metodologia proposta pelo historiador britânico Quentin Skinner, o artigo investiga as intenções e motivações de Nina Rodrigues ao elaborar o diagnóstico da epidemia de coreia centrado em dois eixos determinantes do contágio: o meio social propício e a predisposição dos enfermos.
