This paper aimed the evaluation of the physical and chemical properties alteration of a Red-yellow Latosol after the application of reuse water from an effluent treatment station of wetlands. The experiment was accomplished in laboratory using a soil column. First, 15 L of distilled water were applied in the soil column and after 15 L of reuse water and at interval of 5 L of water a sample was collected for analysis. The results showed decrease of nitrate, potassium and saturated hydraulic conductivity values and an increase in sodium, iron, manganese, zinc and electrical conductivity of the soil after water application. In this way, it may be concluded that the use of waste water for agronomic activities must be used in a rational way, mainly checking the elevation of sodium.
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS CHANGES OF A RED-YELLOW LATOSOL AFTER IMPLEMENTATION OF WATER REUSE IN THE CULTURE OF CURLY LETTUCE (Lactuca sativa, L.)ABSTRACT: The use of treated sewage effluent to save the ponds used for irrigation has been of great interest in agriculture, and the unregulated use of this practice can cause changes in physical and chemical behavior of the soil. This practice has been of great interest in view of reducing the quantity of water withdrawal from the springs and its preservation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical and chemical attributes of a Red-yellow Dystrophic Latosol after the implementation of water reuse. The experiment was conducted in a condition of greenhouse where were grown two rounds of curly lettuce (Lactuca sativa, L.) with two treatments with three repetitions each: witness (provisioning water) and reuse. The results did not show increases in some chemical attributes of fertility as iron, magnesium, zinc, boron, potassium, nitrate, sodium and calcium; decrease in organic matter and manganese, besides increase of hydraulic conductivity and the electrical conductivity of the soil. It was also observed a reduction of the soil pH, besides the increase of SAR and ESP. Thus it must be concluded the application of water reuse for agricultural purposes should be in a rational way, and the elevation of salts in the soil must be monitored.
Time domain reflectometry (TDR) probes were used to monitor the soil solution distribution from drippers discharging at constant flow rates of 2, 4 and 8 L h -1 in soil. Considering the results from different profiles, we observed greater solute storage near the dripper decreasing gradually towards the wetting front. About half of the applied KNO 3 solution (65%) was stored in the first layer (0-0.10 m) for all experiments and 22 % was stored in the next layer (0.10-0.20 m). Drip irrigation has been increasingly used, mainly because of its greater efficiency in water application. The objective of this experiment was to monitor the distribution of soil solution as a function of different application rates through fertigation to characterize root development and fruit yield of the pepper plant. The readings of TDR probes allowed estimates of water content

SOIL SOLUTION DISTRIBUTION APPLIED BY SUB-SURFACE AND SURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION 2 ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to assess the soil solution distribution applied by sub-surface and surface drip irrigation. The trial was conducted in an experimental area at the Engineering Rural Department of ESALQ/USP - Piracicaba, SP. Six trenches were opened, and TDR probes were installed on them arranged as follow: 0.05; 0.15; 0.25; 0.35 and 0.45 m - depth, and 0.05; 0.15; 0.25; 0.35 m - length, totaling 17 probes per trench. The treatments were based on the application depth (0.00 and 0.10m) and flow rate applied (2 and 4 Lh-1): ENT2; ENT4; SUP2 and SUP4. Every hour 1 L of KNO3 solution was applied (10 L total), followed by monitoring ions movement with TDR. Thus, it was possible to verify that, in terms of surface systems, the ions applied by sub-surface drip irrigation achieved larger depth and width, and the largest concentrations were found near the emissions points. KEY WORDS: irrigation, potassium nitrate, NITOSOL, TDR
The success of drip irrigation compared to various other irrigation systems is attributed primarily to its superior water delivery to plant root zones and high efficiency in water use. This work aimed at studying the distribution and storage of soil solution in the soil profile, and the uptake of nutrients through the roots of pepper plants, irrigated through a drip fertigation system at two flow rates, 2 and 4 L h -1 . The experiment was conducted within a greenhouse with plants grown in a medium-textured Oxisol for 120 days. Water and ionic concentration were concurrently measured using TDR probes in the soil profile (at depths ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 m). The root system of plants irrigated with drippers of 4 L h -1 had an area of 69.3 cm 2 while plants irrigated with drippers of 2 L h -1 presented an area of 45.2 cm 2 . The yield of pepper plants were 0.19 kg m -2 and 0.27 kg m -2 for treatments with 2 L h -1 and 4 L h -1 , respectively, supporting the results obtained for nutrients distribution and root development. There was higher tendency for nutrient loss in the treatment with 2 L h -1 , increasing risks of groundwater contamination. The dripper with flow rate of 4 L h -1 was more efficient at distributing and storing water and nutrients in the soil profile, which improved the crop yield.
