Tannin Extraction from the bark of Pinus oocarpa var. oocarpa with sodium carbonate and sodium bisulfite. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tannin extraction potential taken from the bark of Pinus oocarpa var. oocarpa. Nine treatments were performed; the bark was submitted to extraction using water and water containing different concentrations of sodium carbonate and sodium bisulfite. The mixture was kept under reflux for two hours. The extracted contents, the polyphenol found in the extracts (Stiasny number), the tannin yield, the non-tannin yield and the tannin reactivity through UV method were all determined. The results have revealed that it is possible to obtain high tannin content (approximately 39%) from the bark of Pinus oocarpa var. oocarpa by using water extraction when coupled with the addition of salt. The treatment having (8%) of sodium carbonate provided a greater yield of condensed tannins, underlining the importance of utilizing this salt with this concentration during the extraction process. However, the extracts must be evaluated according to other important wood-gluing properties, such as viscosity and gel time.
The development of alternatives for reuse of coconut shell allows inadequate solid residues disposal reduction and provides a novelty option close to the production sites. This paper aims to evaluate the tannin extraction potential of the green coconut mesocarp, as well as its adhesive capacity. Tannin extraction was performed with sodium sulfite diluted in water at 0%, 1%, 5% and 8% concentrations. It was observed which extraction resulted in better yield and characteristics to be used as an adhesive agent. The concentration of sodium sulfite at 5% allowed higher yields of tannin extraction. When compared to phenol formaldehyde, the tannin had similar adhesive characteristics such as 153.84 cp viscosity and 54.57% solid content. For the FT-IR spectroscopy analysis, dry samples of the coconut mesocarp were used. The peaks observed in the infrared spectrum of the green coconut mesocarp are characteristic of tannins found in biomass, presenting desirable chemical characteristics to be used as an adhesive agent. The coconut mesocarp is a material with potential for tannin extraction, making it suitable to be used in the gluing of panels.
In this study, we aimed to determine lignified tissue in young stems of Struthanthus vulgaris Mart. by infrared microspectroscopy and histochemical methods as well as by fluorescence microscopy. Struthanthus vulgaris Mart. is a mistletoe species that belongs to the Loranthaceae family. A brief anatomical description was also carried out. The first procedure for analysis was to elaborate anatomical cross sections (20-30 µm) from young stems before and after treatment with NaOH 1%. This procedure was applied to release possible low molecular mass phenolic compounds. Safranin-astra blue was used to distinguish anatomical tissues while Wiesner test enabled verification of lignified pericyclic fibers. Infrared microspectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of lignin in this region according to the following spectral signals: 1600 (shoulder), 1511, 1453, 1338 and 1244 cm-1. Analyses of the cross section of young stems under fluorescence microscopy before and after treatment with NaOH 1% allowed us to confirm the presence of low mass phenolic compounds in the region of pericyclic fibers.
