L'élevage pastoral joue un rôle prépondérant dans l'économie des pays de l'Afrique tropicale. Au Bénin, l'élevage, surtout celui du gros bétail, est essentiellement transhumant. De nombreuses études et rencontres scientifiques se sont consacrées à sa connaissance en vue de résoudre les difficultés qu'elle génère et de nombreuses dispositions réglementaires ont été adoptées dans ce même objectif. Le but de la présente étude est de faire un état des lieux de ces différents travaux afin d'en sortir les contraintes auxquelles ce système est confronté. Pour ce faire, plusieurs documents qui ont traité de la transhumance au Bénin et dans la sous-région Ouest Africaine ont été consultés. Les données obtenues ont été synthétisées. Ensuite, une caractérisation de la transhumance a été faite. L'outil utilisé est la triangulation. Il ressort de l'étude que les premiers écrits sur la transhumance datent de 1905. Les résultats ont également permis de voir qu'elle est confrontée à des problèmes d'alimentation, de variabilités climatiques, des textes règlementaires, de conflits et de disponibilités des infrastructures pastorales. Il ressort également que la transhumance demeure sous la forte influence des systèmes de culture surtout pendant la sécheresse. Mais la contribution des systèmes de culture demeure insuffisante.
La forêt communautaire de Kaodji au Bénin regorge d'importantes ressources biologiques, qui ne sont pas encore toutes bien connues. Cette étude examine les caractéristiques écologique et structurale de cette forêt. A cet effet, la diversité floristique a été estimée au moyen de 48 relevés floristiques effectués selon la méthode sigmatiste de Braun-Blanquet (1932) dans différentes strates forestières et d'indices de diversité. Des mesures dendrométriques, de distances et de pentes ont été effectuées en vue de déterminer le profil structural lié à chaque type de phytocénoses et celui topographique de la forêt de Kaodji. Cette forêt se remarque notamment par deux strates nettement indépendantes (indice de Jaccard < 0,45). Il s'agit de : (i) la savane arbustive ayant pour espèces dominantes, Combretum collinum et Daniella oliveri ; (ii) et la forêt claire marquée par Isoberlinia doka et Combretum collinum. Leurs richesses floristiques moyennes sont respectivement de 36 et de 49. Les indices de Shannon et l'équitabilité de Piélou montrent des valeurs relativement faibles (2,33 bits et 0,45 en savane et 2,69 bits et 0,48 en forêt claire). La répartition par classe de diamètre des arbres dans ces deux milieux présente l'allure d'un « J » renversé et s'ajuste au mieux à une fonction logarithmique. Sur le plan topographique, cette forêt présente un relief vallonné d'allure pittoresque pouvant constituer un site touristique en cas de conservation et d'aménagement.
RESUMEObjectif : L'étude a pour objectif d'étudier la distribution géographique et de réaliser la caractérisation phytoécologique des populations de rôniers (Borassus aethiopum) ainsi que leur caractérisation écologique dans la zone de transition. Méthode et résultats : Le géo-référencement de toutes les localités abritant le rônier a été fait à l'aide des informations reçues dans les Centres Communaux de Production Agricoles (CECPA). Les inventaires floristiques et forestiers ont été réalisés à travers 70 placeaux rectangulaire de 50 X 30 m dans trois communes des trois phytodistricts du secteur d'étude. B. aethiopum est plus distribué dans le district du Zou que dans les deux autres. Au total, 64 espèces ligneuses réparties en 25 familles sont inventoriées. Les groupes de relevé identifiés et caractérisés sont celui des champs et jachères ; celui des savanes boisées et celui des forêts galeries dégradées. Les paramètres floristiques et structuraux varient d'un groupement à l'autre. Ainsi, la richesse spécifique varie de 20 à 40 espèces, l'indice de diversité de Shannon de 1,89 à 5,49 bits, l'équitabilité de Pielou de 0,87 à 0,97 avec prédominance de la famille des Leguminosae. La densité des pieds adultes de B. aethiopum hectare oscille entre 77,78 et 132,89 tiges/ha et celle des pieds régénérés naturellement entre 1650 et 5236 tiges/ha. Quant à la surface terrière, elle est varié entre 26,47 à 29,55 m²/ha et le diamètre moyen de l'arbre est compris entre 33,72 et 37,64 cm puis la hauteur entre 8 et 18 m. Conclusion et application : L'étude a permis de montrer que l'habitat naturel de Borassus aethiopum est la savane et la galerie forestière ainsi que la diversité des groupes de relevé abritant le rônier. La régénération naturelle de cette espèce aurait été une contribution à l'augmentation de la diversité biologique (vu son importance dans l'écosystème) mais elle est soumise à une forte pression anthropique. Ceci nécessite des actions urgentes de conservations.
