Peruvian biodiversity is pivotal for conserving and managing natural resources, food security, poverty reduction, health, biosecurity, new industrial product development, and ecotourism (Smith et al., 2011). Geotrupidae Diversity in Peru: 1 subfamily, 4 genera, and 11 species. Recognition: The body shape is oval or round, and the head is not deflexed. The antennae are 11-segmented with a 3-segmented, opposable club with all antennomeres tomentose. The eyes are completely or partially divided by a canthus. The clypeus is often with a tubercle or horn. The labrum is truncate, prominent, and produced beyond the apex of the clypeus. The mandibles are prominent and produced beyond the apex of the labrum. The pronotum is convex with a base wider than or subequal to the elytral base and with or without tubercles, ridges, horns, or sulci. The elytra are convex, with or without striae. The pygidium is concealed by the elytra (Jameson, 2002a). Habitat: Life histories of the geotrupids are diverse, and food habits vary from saprophagous to coprophagous and mycetophagous. Adults of most species are secretive, living most of their life in burrows. Although adults do not tend larvae, adults provision food for larvae in brood burrows. Adults dig vertical burrows (15-200 cm in depth) and provision larval cells with dead leaves, cow dung, horse dung, or humus. Burrows of some species extend to a depth of 3.0 m (Jameson, 2002a). Notes: The family Geotrupidae includes 68 genera and about 620 species (Scholtz and Browne, 1996). The subfamily Geotrupinae does not occur in South America.

The 541 species of Scarabaeoidea known to occur in Panama are listed. Synonymies are included when present. Names placed in new synonymy are Pelidnota hirsutiphallica Ratcliffe and Jameson (=P. pubes Ohaus) and Bolax vittatus Casey (= B. magnus Bates). All taxa are accompanied by an abbreviated reference to the original literature citation wherein they were described. A list of provinces in Panama in which each species is known to occur is also provided.

The use of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) by primarily pre-and non-industrial peoples throughout the world is reviewed. These uses consist of (1) religion and folklore, (2) folk medicine, (3) food, and (4) regalia and body ornamentation. The use of scarabs in religion or cosmology, once widespread in ancient Egypt, exists only rarely today in other cultures. Scarabs have a minor role in folk medicine today although they may have been more important in the past. The predominant utilization of these beetles today, and probably in the past as well, is as food with emphasis on the larval stage. Lastly, particularly large or brightly colored scarabs (or their parts) are used (mostly in the New World) to adorn the body or as regalia.

Con el objetivo de ampliar el conocimiento de la diversidad de escarabajos en Colombia en áreas hasta ahora poco estudiadas, se caracterizó la fauna de Scarabaeidae (Pleurosticti) de la selva baja del bosque pluvial tropical del Chocó-Biogeográfico colombiano, durante los años 2001-2003. Se seleccionaron cinco sitios de muestreo en ecosistemas con diferentes procesos de intervención (bosque primario, bosque secundario, rastrojo bajo y dos parcelas agroforestales), correspondiente a los municipios de Itsmina, Lloró, Quibdó, Tadó y Unión Panamericana, ubicados entre los 43 y 150 metros de altitud. La captura de los escarabajos se realizó mediante jama, trampas de luz negra, captura manual y carpotrampas modificadas. Igualmente, se exploraron troncos en proceso de descomposición de las especies vegetales como Brosimum utile H.B.K, Lecythis ampla Miers, Pouteria caimito Radlk, Apeiba aspera Aubl., Inga spp., Cedrela odorata L. y Jacaranda hesperi Dugand entre otros. Se colectaron e identificaron un total de 17,840 especímenes pertenecientes a 65 especies, distribuidas en 4 subfamilias, 12 tribus y 38 géneros. La subfamilia con mayor número de especies fue Dynastinae con un total de 26 especies, seguida de Rutelinae con 25, Cetoniinae con 11 y Melolonthinae con 3 especies. De estos Pelidnota chiriquina Bates, Spodochlamys cupreola Bates, Gymnetis pardalis (G & P), Gymnetis vandepolli (Bates), Hoplopyga ocellata (G & P) y Guatemalica hueti (Chevrolat) son nuevos registros para Colombia. Los géneros con mayor riqueza de especies fueron: Cyclocephala Dejean, 1821: C. amazona (Linné), C. carbonaria Arrow, C. melanocephala (Fabricius), C. pardolocarnoi Dechambe y C. fulgurata Burmeister; Anomala Samouelle, 1819: Anomala cincta Say, A. medellina Ohaus, A. undulata Melsheimer; Gymnetis MacLeay, 1819: Gymnetis coturnix (Burmeister), G. stellata (Latreille), G. holosericea (Voet) y Rutela Latreille, 1802: Rutela heraldica Perty, R. pygidialis Ohaus y R. sanguinolenta Waterhouse. Se incluye una clave taxonómica para la identificación de las 65 especies. Se aportan comentarios de la biología y ecología de las especies observadas.

A new species of Stenocrates Burmeister, 1847 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Cyclocephalini) from Peru is described: Stenocrates lissothorax Ratcliffe and Figueroa. A description, diagnosis, distribution, and illustrations of the new species are provided. This represents the 52 nd species in the genus, and the 15 th species known from Peru.
