Ueber die Einheit der Atomgewiehte verSffentlicht T h e o d o r e William Richards 1) eine Abhandlung~ in der er aus den ~'erschiedensten Ortinden daftir eintritt, den Besehltissen der internationalen Commission zu folgen und Sauerstoff~ 16 als Grundlage liir die Bereehnung der Atomgewiehte anzunehmen. Auf die Controverse zwisehen Erdmann e) und Brauner ~) iiber diesen selben Gegenstand geht Rieh ards hierbei nieht n~ther ein, sondern legt das Hauptgewieht far seine Ansicht darauf~ dass in der bei weitem grSssten Anzahl der F~lle der Sauerstoff das Element war, das als Vergleiehseinheit zur Berechhung der Atomgewich~e der anderen Elemente gedient hat. Er folgt hierin der Zusammenstellung yon Clark ed), aus welcher sieh ergibt, .dass nur die Atomgewichte yon Sauerstoff~ Stickstoff, Zink, Aluminium. Eisen~ ~iekel, Kobalt und Gold dutch Bestimmung des Gewiehts oder des Volumens yon Wasserstoff bereehnet sind, w~thrend in allen anderen F~tllen der Sauerstoff direct oder indirect zur Bereehnung der Atomgewichte herangezogen werden musste. So lange noch die aus den Stas'sehen Bestimmungen herrahrenden Zahlen ihre Oeltung behalten,-und dies werden sie wohl, so lange sie nieht an Genauigkeit ilber: troffen sind~-so lange muss man anch den Sauerstoff als Einheit far die At0mgewichte annehmen. FOx Erdmann'sVorsehlag, das Silber als Einheit zu w~hlen, ist Richards nicht sehr eingenommen, well dieses Metall wegen der Leiehtigkeit, mit der es Sauerstoff absorbirt, nicht zuverl~tssig genug ist, um bei Aton)gewiehtsbestimmungen verwendet zu werden~ weil es zweitens nicht als Beweis far die Avogadro'sche Regel dienen kann , und drittens, weil es schwer ist, einen passenden nummerischen Werth ft~r die Atomgewiehtszahl des Silbers zu finden. Nun geht Ri char ds auf die paedagogischen Erw~tgungen tiber, die far viele bestimmend sind, um an der alten Einheit : Wasserstoff~ 1 festzuhalten. Er h~lt diese absolut nicht for stiehhaltig~ da es ihm ~)hne Schwierigkeiten gelungen ist, im Unterricht zur Beweisftihrung far
