For nickel-based catalysts, in-situ formed nickel oxyhydroxide has been generally believed as the origin for anodic biomass electro-oxidations. However, rationally understanding the catalytic mechanism still remains challenging. In this work, we demonstrate that NiMn hydroxide as the anodic catalyst can enable methanol-to-formate electro-oxidation reaction (MOR) with a low cell-potential of 1.33/1.41 V at 10/100 mA cm−2, a Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100% and good durability in alkaline media, remarkably outperforming NiFe hydroxide. Based on a combined experimental and computational study, we propose a cyclic pathway that consists of reversible redox transitions of NiII-(OH)2/NiIII-OOH and a concomitant MOR. More importantly, it is proved that the NiIII-OOH provides combined active sites including NiIII and nearby electrophilic oxygen species, which work in a cooperative manner to promote either spontaneous or non-spontaneous MOR process. Such a bifunctional mechanism can well account for not only the highly selective formate formation but also the transient presence of NiIII-OOH. The different catalytic activities of NiMn and NiFe hydroxides can be attributed to their different oxidation behaviors. Thus, our work provides a clear and rational understanding of the overall MOR mechanism on nickel-based hydroxides, which is beneficial for advanced catalyst design.
Electro-reduction of nitrate to ammonia (e-NRA) has been considered as a facile and promising approach to eliminate nitrate pollution and produce ammonia (NH3) under ambient conditions. Nevertheless, in recent state-of-the-art...
Maintaining freshness of data collection in Internetof-Things (IoT) networks has attracted increasing attention. By taking into account age-of-information (AoI), we investigate the trajectory planning problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is used to aid a cluster-based IoT network. An optimization problem is formulated to minimize the total AoI of the collected data by the UAV from the ground IoT network. Since the total AoI of the IoT network depends on the flight time of the UAV and the data collection time at hovering points, we jointly optimize the selection of hovering points and the visiting order to these points. We exploit the state-of-the-art transformer and the weighted A*, which is a path search algorithm, to design a machine learning algorithm to solve the formulated problem. The whole UAV-IoT system is fed into the encoder network of the proposed algorithm, and the algorithm's decoder network outputs the visiting order to ground clusters. Then, the weighted A* is used to find the hovering point for each cluster in the ground IoT network. Simulation results show that the trained model by the proposed algorithm has a good generalization ability to generate solutions for IoT networks with different numbers of ground clusters, without the need to retrain the model. Furthermore, results show that our proposed algorithm can find better UAV trajectories with the minimum total AoI when compared to other algorithms.
Cellular mechanical properties are closely related to cell physiological functions and status, and their analysis and measurement help understand cell mechanism. In this study, a microfluidic platform was built to measure the mechanical properties of cells by using dielectrophoretic (DEP) force. The electrodes generally used to stretch cells are made of indium tin oxide, Au, and Pt, which have inherent disadvantages. In this paper, galinstan alloy liquid metal was first introduced as microelectrode to form non-uniform electric filed for red blood cell stretching manipulation. The liquid metal microelectrode is easy to manufacture, low in price, stable at high voltage, and reusable. An effective microfluidic chip integrated with liquid metal electrode was designed and simulated, and a series of experiments to capture and stretch red blood cells was performed. The length of the red blood cells increased from 6 µm to 8 µm under the DEP force from 0 pN to 103 pN. This work also revealed the potential use of liquid metal as microelectrode to manipulate the microparticles and cells in a microfluidic chip.
