Obesity increases the risks of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, ultimately contributing to mortality. Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) was established to improve the management of obesity through research and education; to that end, the Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of KSSO reviews systemic evidence using expert panels to develop clinical guidelines. The clinical practice guidelines for obesity were revised in 2018 using National Health Insurance Service Health checkup data from 2006 to 2015. Following these guidelines, we added a category, class III obesity, which includes individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥35 kg/m

. Agreeing with the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, Asian Pacific Chapter consensus, we determined that bariatric surgery is indicated for Korean patients with BMI ≥35 kg/m

who have comorbidities. The new guidelines focus on guiding clinicians and patients to manage obesity more effectively. Our recommendations and treatment algorithms can serve as a guide for the evaluation, prevention, and management of overweight and obesity.
The Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association revised and updated the 6th Clinical Practice Guidelines in 2019. Targets of glycemic, blood pressure, and lipid control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were updated. The obese and overweight population is increasing steadily in Korea, and half of the Koreans with diabetes are obese. Evidence-based recommendations for weight-loss therapy for obesity management as treatment for hyperglycemia in T2DM were provided. In addition, evidence from large clinical studies assessing cardiovascular outcomes following the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists in patients with T2DM were incorporated into the recommendations.
Obesity is a prevalent and complex disease. The prevalence of obesity in Korea increased from 29.7% in 2010 to 35.7% in 2018, with the prevalence of abdominal obesity among Korean adults in 2018 being 23.8%. Obesity contributes to medical costs and socio-economic burden due to associated comorbidities. The treatment and management of obesity is changing and reflects new clinical evidence. The 2020 Korean Society for the Study of Obesity Guideline for the Management of Obesity in Korea summarizes evidence-based recommendations and treatment guidelines.
Bipolar spindle formation is pivotal for accurate segregation of mitotic chromosomes during cell division. A growing body of evidence suggests that, in addition to centrosome-and chromatinbased microtubule (MT) nucleation, MT-based MT nucleation plays an important role for proper bipolar spindle formation in various eukaryotic organisms. Although a recently discovered Augmin complex appears to play a central role in this event, how Augmin is regulated remains unknown. Here we provide evidence that a mammalian polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) localizes to mitotic spindles and promotes MT-based MT nucleation by directly regulating Augmin. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that Cdc2-dependent phosphorylation on a γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC) recruitment protein, Nedd1/GCP-WD, at the previously uncharacterized S460 residue induces the Nedd1-Plk1 interaction. This step appeared to be critical to allow Plk1 to phosphorylate the Hice1 subunit of the Augmin complex to promote the Augmin-MT interaction and MT-based MT nucleation from within the spindle. Loss of either the Nedd1 S460 function or the Plk1-dependent Hice1 phosphorylation impaired both the Augmin-MT interaction and γ-tubulin recruitment to the spindles, thus resulting in improper bipolar spindle formation that ultimately leads to mitotic arrest and apoptotic cell death. Thus, via the formation of the Nedd1-Plk1 complex and subsequent Augmin phosphorylation, Plk1 regulates spindle MT-based MT nucleation to accomplish normal bipolar spindle formation and mitotic progression. mitosis | spindle assembly | polo-box domain | distributive phosphorylation | Ser/Thr protein kinase
Although all markers demonstrated good diagnostic performance, they varied depending on the pathologic types of benign diseases and ovarian cancer. For accurate diagnosis of ovarian cancer, CA 125, HE4, and ROMA should be used complementarily.
Aims/Introduction: It is thought that adipocytokines contribute to the increased risk of vascular complications in type 2 diabetes. However, there is still limited information on the relationship between microangiopathies and adipocytokines, such as adiponectin, leptin and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: The present study examined the relationship between fasting serum adiponectin, leptin, and TNF-a levels and microangiopathies in Korean type 2 diabetes. A total of 153 patients were recruited and evaluated for diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy. Serum adiponectin, TNF-a and leptin levels were measured. Results: Serum adiponectin levels were significantly lower in patients with nephropathy than in those without nephropathy (P = 0.017), and were significantly higher in patients with retinopathy or neuropathy than those without retinopathy or neuropathy (P = 0.01 and P = 0.002, respectively). The mean levels of leptin were significantly higher in patients with neuropathy than in those without neuropathy (P = 0.002). The mean levels of TNF-a were not significantly different according to any of the three microangiopathies. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio for the presence of neuropathy in the highest tertile of adiponectin was 4.3 (95% confidence interval 1.59-11.62), as compared with the patients in the lowest tertile of adiponectin level. Conclusions: Levels of adipocytokines were significantly different according to the presence of each microangiopathy. In particular, higher serum adiponectin was independently associated with increased odds for the presence of neuropathy. Future prospective studies with larger numbers of patients are required to establish a direct relationship between plasma adipocytokine concentrations and the development or severity of diabetic microangiopathies.
