Background: Through its ability to address and remove fear and misunderstanding and the resulting sexual reluctance and related problems, pre-marital sexual education and counselling can contribute to sexual satisfaction. Methods: This quasi-experimental research conducted in a pre-test–post-test control group design aimed to examine the effectiveness of nursing interventions on a premarital counselling program and its impacts on the sexual satisfaction of couples (36 couples in the experimental group and 35 couples in the control group). Results: Although no difference was detected between the experimental and control groups in terms of the level of knowledge on pre-test point averages, the difference between them in terms of post-test knowledge gain averages was statistically significant. Approval rates for sexual myths in the pre-test were 27.87% in the experimental group and 37.03% in the control group; in the post-test they were 23.51% and 36.66% respectively. In the experimental group, 80.6% of the women and 63.9% of the men, and in the control group, 77.1% of the women and 71.4% of the men were established as having a problem-free sexual life. Conclusions: It was also discovered that levels of sexual satisfaction were shown to be higher among women and men in the experimental group who had attended premarital sexual counselling education than the women and men in the control group. A recommendation to encourage engaged couples to attend premarital sexual counselling is made based on the findings. It is thought that an intervention plan prepared within the framework of the Information, Motivation, Behavioural Skills theoretical model will help nurses guide recently-married couples to greater sexual satisfaction.

Introduction: Nurses need to use genetic information in care; several areas of current need include primary care, public health, cardiovascular, geriatric and oncology nursing. Nursing faculties may be reluctant to add genetics to existing courses, let alone tackle the work of teaching an entire course in genetics. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the current genetic knowledge of nursing students regarding genetics and genetic education. Methods: This is a self-administered cross-sectional survey. A total of 162 of 209 nursing students returned a questionnaire. Data from the surveys reflect the students’ self-reported knowledge regarding medical genetics (response rate = 77.5%). Results: The majority of students noted ‘some’ to ‘minimal’ knowledge of Mendelian inheritance and human chromosome abnormalities. In terms of awareness of genetic abnormalities and disorders, students claimed to have ‘high’ knowledge of breast cancer, phenylketonuria, thalassemia, colon cancer, Rh factor, cleft lip/palate, hemophilia, color blindness, and polydactyly. Students stated that they would like to receive more education related to genetic diseases and genetic counseling (93.9%). Conclusions: The majority of students reported very little knowledge of genetics and genetic disorders. Most of students responded positively to all the education methods suggested in the questionnaire, adding that they would like more education about genetics. The results from this study may help to reform and upgrade the educational strategy concerning genetics in the Schools of Health.

AIM: The study was carried out as descriptive to determine the knowledge and practices about the subject emergency contraception of the pharmacists and their helpers in the pharmacies in central Manisa. METHOD: The universe of the research was formed by the 113 pharmacies registered to Manisa chamber of pharmacists in the year 2008 and all the pharmacies were included in the study. 47 pharmacists and 88 helpers agreed to join the study. The research which was planned to be descriptive March-to-June 2008. A questionnaire was produced by researchers and filled in during face-to face interviews with the pharmacists and their helpers. RESULTS: The pharmacists and their helpers stated that combined pills (46.8% and 44.5%) and condoms (41.5% and 42.7%) the most requested family planning methods their pharmacy. It was determined that 48.9% of the pharmacists, 33% of the pharmacist’s helpers gave information to customers about their use of family planning methods, 38.3% of the pharmacists, 23.9 % of the pharmacist’s helpers gave information what to do in case of failure to use/ where to apply to. 91.5% of the pharmacists, 95.5% of the pharmacist’s helpers stated that they had emergency contraception (EC) purpose pills in their pharmacies. It was determined that 61.7% of the pharmacists, 28.4% of the pharmacist’s helpers had the knowledge about EC, 61.7% of the pharmacists, 52.3% of the pharmacist’s helpers could consider the EC methods true, 68.1% of the pharmacists, 70.5% of the pharmacist’s helpers gave the correct answers to the question of when the EC – purpose pills would be used. 68.1% of the pharmacists, 45.5% of the pharmacist’s helpers stated that EC methods might have adverse effects, 14.9% of the pharmacists, 25% of the pharmacist’s helpers stated that EC methods were protect agains to STD or not information about it, 12.8% of the pharmacists, 9.1% of the pharmacist’s helpers stated that these pills might be effective after the pregnancy occurred. It was determined that 53.2% of the pharmacists, 48.9% of the pharmacist’s helpers got information about EC before. CONCLUSION: It was found out that the pharmacists and their helpers did not make enough counseling about the use of family planning methods, the knowledge level of the pharmacists and their helpers about emergency contraception was quite low, and they had some misinformation. It was also concluded that the pre-graduation education given to the pharmacists shout be upgraded with respect to adulth education principles so that they can act as EC consultants and wide-scale in-service aducation programmes which would also pharmacist’s helpers, should be organized and participationin these programmes should be further ancouraged. Sexual health education is a broadly based, community-supported activity that requires full participation of the medical, educational, public health, social welfare and legal systems in our society. Information, Motivation, Behavioural skills (IMB) model is used to create effective sexual health education programs. This model can help individuals to reduce risk behaviours, to prevent sexual health-related problems and to guide individuals in enhancing sexual health. Sexual health education programs are based on the three components of the model: Information- Will help individuals to be better informed Motivation- Will motivate individuals acquire the relevant behavioural skills that will likely to reduce negative outcomes and enhance sexual health. Behaviuoral Skills-Will help individuals acquire the relevant behavioural skills that will likely to reduce negative outcomes and enhance sexual helath.
