Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify dynamic capabilities in joint R&D projects, that enable them to successfully achieve knowledge creation and discover how they behave throughout the life cycle of a collaborative project, although this understanding could enhance the interorganizational knowledge creation process. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted 65 semi-structured interviews and utilized secondary data from a joint R&D project. The authors analyzed all data using the Gioia method. Findings The authors confirm that specific dynamic capabilities are needed to create interorganizational knowledge and discovered 11 knowledge-based dynamic capabilities (KBDCs) for successful innovation results in joint R&D projects. Gioia method allowed to discover that different KBDCs are necessary for the different phases of the project lifecycle. Additionally, the authors identify two microprocesses in which KBDCs are engaged in joint R&D projects, knowing that is a part of the sensing and seizing processes and synthetizing that is a part of the seizing process, and establish several KBDC microfoundations. Research limitations/implications We used retrospective interviews. This kind of interviews are impacted by the experiences of the respondents lived after they have participated in the joint R&D project. Practical implications Dynamic capabilities for collaborative knowledge creation and their specific microfoundations can help managers delineate their strategic practices and actions to achieve more sustainable, long-lasting results from joint R&D projects. Originality/value The authors improve Teece’s model and propose two microprocesses in which dynamic capabilities are engaged, that emerged in the context of a joint R&D project, knowing that is a part of the sensing and seizing processes and synthetizing that is a part of the seizing process, which supplement those already known: sensing, seizing and transforming. The authors tested the Gioia method, which is important for detecting dynamic capabilities; therefore, the authors propose a methodological advance that can contribute to future studies. The authors provide an interorganizational perspective on KBDC and a methodological view of the changes in KBDCs required for joint R&D projects.
Purpose Social innovation is a recent theme, and the practices related to this area are characterized by punctual actions and projects restricted by time and space that make it difficult to develop strategies that can be sustained in this field. Therefore, one point that deserves to be highlighted in studies on social innovation is a matter of scalability. This paper aims to deal with a bibliometry whose objective was to map the existing studies about scalability of social innovation carried out in the Capes and EBSCOHost portals. Design/methodology/approach This paper deals with a bibliometry. The topic researched in this bibliometry is scalability of social innovation. The databases chosen for this research were Portal Periódico Capes and EBSCOHost because they are the leading providers of search databases. Findings A total of 42 papers were considered, distributed between 2002 and 2017. The analysis criteria for the study were origin (composed by year, author, country of origin, periodical and impact factor), focus of the investigations, justification, method and main techniques of research, contributions and theoretical advances and challenges and paths. Originality/value Among the main results found, one of them is that scalability is a topic that began to be researched recently, so that the USA and Brazil lead the research. Most of the studies focused on the scalability process and justified the importance of studies on the subject as a way to explore the potential of expanding the social impacts of a social innovation. Several studies have emphasized the role of networks as being quite positive for the scalability process and have been concerned with identifying factors that contribute to the scalability process. The challenge that most stood out among the papers was the financial sustainability of a social innovation. At the end, a research agenda was proposed.
A large number of recent studies show that sustainable innovation requires specific and new dynamic capabilities related to a new form of collaboration with suppliers, customers, research institutes and other related partners. These sources and external knowledges and competences require new skills in managing relationships and knowledge integration. Considering this gap, the purpose of this paper is to identify how knowledge-based dynamic capabilities (KBDCs) influence the process of developing sustainable innovations. To meet this objective, we use a procedural approach from the reconstruction of the green plastic project, in its R&D trajectory, from retrospective interviews and secondary data. Our results point to a set of practices (microfoundations) essential in the development process of sustainable innovations. We also identify the changes experienced in the knowledge capabilities of the company throughout the development of the project; this component provides the originality of this paper.
Purpose: The popularisation of studies on ecosystem occurred, fundamentally, after the work of Adner (2006) and began to gain theoretical strength after the study by Gomes et al. (2018a), who identified a turning point between the concepts of business ecosystems and innovation ecosystems (IE) analysing studies from 1993 to 2016. The objective of this study is to present the characteristics, trends, and current research avenues of the concept post-transition, especially in the period from 2017 to 2019, during which more publications were produced than in the first 24 years. Design/methodology/approach: Using data from the Web of Science, we performed a systematic literature review, through bibliometric ([Formula: see text] = 153 studies) and content analysis ([Formula: see text] = 15 studies). Data were analysed through bibliometrix (a R-tool package) and reading of the studies selected. Findings: Our study revealed some new research suggestions linked to actors, infrastructure and financial capital for innovation; public policy, social capital, and development; IE Governance; and IE limits. Research limitation/implications: One limitation of our study is the fact that it only used the Web of Science database. Originality/value: Even though the literature on IE is extensive, no studies have captured the recent trends on this topic. These trends can be useful for ‘new avenues’ in IE research. The findings also can be important to clarify the concept of IE.
ResumoEste estudo partiu da reflexão acerca da complexidade criada com a expansão e a profissionalização do ensino superior no Brasil, com o objetivo de analisar como os coordenadores de curso percebem os desafios e as possibilidades de empregabilidade e mobilidade social dos estudantes e egressos de cursos superiores de tecnologia (CST's) na região metropolitana de Porto Alegre/RS, Brasil. Para tanto, além da consulta a dados secundários, este artigo valeu-se de 13 entrevistas semiestruturadas com coordenadores de CST's. Os resultados apontam que a expansão e profissionalização do ensino superior possibilitou acesso a esse nível de ensino a pessoas que dificilmente o teriam. Ademais, se percebeu os CST's como cursos mais focados em atividade operacionais da área, que vêm atender uma demanda do mercado de trabalho, formando profissionais especialistas, em tempo reduzido e a custos baixos. Contudo, verificou-se que o ensino superior acaba servindo como máquina de triagem, formando profissionais para atender às necessidades do mercado de trabalho, mas não possibilitando maior mobilidade social. São diplomas que fornecem acesso fácil ao mercado de trabalho, mas que são limitados nas chances que disponibilizam de evolução na carreira, posteriormente. Por fim, aventa-se a necessidade de estudos empíricos com alunos e egressos para que se tenha maior compreensão da expansão e profissionalização do ensino superior e suas repercussões para o mercado de trabalho e para a mobilidade social no Brasil.Palavras-chave: mercado de trabalho; empregabilidade; mobilidade social; ensino superior; cursos superiores de tecnologia.
