Summary. The conceptual design of data-intensive information systems requires an integrated model-based methodology. Object oriented models are expected to improve traditional approaches supported by common CASE tools and hence the main emphasis is now on object oriented database design. An object oriented design methodology based on stepwise refinement is presented in this paper. We start with a first incomplete schema in an object oriented datamodel (OODM). Refinement steps comprise completion, instantiation, splitting and specialization of classes with emphasis on the data structure as the primary design component. The design process may come to an end when a closed OODM schema is reached.
