A growing trend in Software Engineering (SE) courses, especially in capstones, is to use an actual business or industry client for case-based projects. We will broadly examine approaches taken to deal with situations occurring when projects with outside clients are brought into the classroom at various size institutions in different countries. Specifically we will discuss the issues of client management, team management, project assessment, and preparation and planning for courses utilizing external clients.
This special session will provide an overview of the programs that ACM's executive committee on Women in Computing (ACM-W) coordinates for the recruitment and retention of women in computing. The overview will include projects in all areas of ACM-W with special focus on those projects impacting the educational environment. The ACM Committee on Women in Computing (ACM-W) coordinates many projects in an effort to celebrate, inform, and support women in the computing fields, and many of these projects are of particular interest to educators in the computing fields. The committee has successfully used the SIGCSE conference for the past several years to disseminate important results and materials to computer science educators about these projects. This special session will help facilitate the communication between educators in computing and members of the ACM-W committee by allowing the committee to update the SIGCSE community about the status of several ACM-W projects. The activities of the committee are summarized on its website at www.acm.org/women. In addition, the special session will provide opportunity for the SIGCSE community to express needs and interests that they have for additional projects for consideration by the ACM-W Committee. This communication is essential for the ongoing effectiveness of the ACM-W Committee. Outline of SessionThe ACM-W Committee divides its projects into five areas: Pipeline, Celebration, International, Policy, and Community. Although all the projects in each of these areas will be summarized, special focus will be placed on the status of the projects in the Pipeline and Community areas as those are the projects that focus on issues in the educational environment. Paula Gabbert will start the session with a brief overview of the mission of ACM-W and its five areas. PipelineChris Stephenson will describe the projects in the Pipeline area which focus on the "pipeline effect" with special emphasis on activities for K-12 institutions. One of the newest projects for ACM-W in this area involves working with ACM's Computer Science Teacher's Association (CSTA) to develop a poster specifically targeting young girls interested in computing. The status of this project as well as the ACM-W high school student chapters will be presented. CelebrationBarbara Boucher Owens will describe ongoing projects in this area which focus on the celebration of the contributions of women in computer science. The newest project in this area focuses on collecting oral histories of women computing educators. The SIGCSE community should be particularly interested in this project as it facilitates the celebration of the accomplishments of its female members. The status of this project will be presented as well as information on how people can be trained to become interviewers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
