El estudio busca conocer la prevalencia de exposición a sustancias legales, ilegales y fármacos; así como los factores de riesgo asociados a la exposición reciente en adolescentes escolarizados de la ciudad de Ambato. Se trabajó con una muestra de 502 adolescentes (56,6 hombres), entre los 14 y a los 20 años, pertenecientes a cuatro centros educativos (58% públicos) y domiciliados en Ambato (76,5% del sector urbano). Se encontró que el café (78,9%) es la sustancia de mayor consumo durante el último mes, seguido por los energizantes (46,8%), el alcohol (22,5%) y el tabaco (15,7%). Sobre la exposición a sustancias legales peligrosas, predomina el consumo de alcohol, seguido por el tabaco y en cuanto a las sustancias ilegales es el cannabis. La disponibilidad económica y los centros privados aparecen como factores de riesgo en la exposición al alcohol y el tabaco; la migración académica y la predisposición favorable al consumo constituyen factores de riesgo para la exposición al consumo de alcohol, tabaco y también al de sustancias ilegales; ser mujer aparece como factor de riesgo para el consumo de calmantes y somníferos. Se estudian las implicaciones al respecto de los hallazgos encontrados.
