rien d'intuitif. Cela revient à affirmer qu'un élément qui serait absent du tableau peut avoir une valeur aussi décisive que ce qui est sous nos yeux. Dans son étude sur les variations de Picasso à partir des ménines de Diego Velázquez dans L'origine de la perspective 3 , Damisch démontre que cette manière contre-intuitive de penser les transformations est bien à l'oeuvre dans le « système Meninas » de Picasso, système qui est en mesure d'articuler une pensée complexe en déplaçant et en condensant certains éléments. Cette « pensée des oeuvres » dialogue avec des modèles et des paradigmes d'ordre philosophique, quitte à les contredire. Elle n'est donc pas réductible au seul champ de l'histoire, tout en réclamant qu'on la considère dans toute son épaisseur historique et anthropologique. Contre le réductionnisme positiviste, Damisch a toujours pensé l'art du passé avec celui du présent, transposant les questions de l'un à l'autre et montrant comment certains aspects de l'un et de l'autre ne peuvent apparaître que dans ce dialogue. Il peut sembler paradoxal à la lecture de ses livres que les frontières entre art, philosophie, sémiotique, anthropologie et psychanalyse apparaissent finalement comme moins problématiques que la frontière entre l'art et l'histoire, laquelle serait pour certains la « soeur aînée » de l'histoire de l'art. Que signifie le terme « histoire » quand on l'associe au terme « art » ? Comment traiter historiquement des objets qui continuent à produire des effets au-delà du moment qui les a vus naître ? Comment rendre compte des temporalités complexes qui traversent chaque oeuvre et la lient à d'autres à travers l'histoire, composant des constellations, plus ou moins grandes, dont le montage peut relever du travail d'un artiste autant que de celui d'un historien de l'art ? Damisch a souvent rapproché l'histoire de l'art de celle des sciences : l'histoire est affaire d'hypothèses, d'expérimentations, de théories et de questions, parfois sans réponse, souvent porteuses d'autres questions encore. C'est sans doute la raison pour laquelle la dimension énergétique de la théorie freudienne du « travail du rêve », avec ses opérations de condensation et de déplacement, occupe une place importante dans la réflexion de Damisch. Comme dans la pensée du rêve, les matériaux figuratifs qui font la pensée de la peinture ne sont pas inertes : ils travaillent, remplacent, déplacent et condensent. Damisch s'est profondément interrogé sur la portée de l'« hypothèse de l'inconscient » dans le domaine de l'art et de l'esthétique. Ainsi parvient-il, dans le Jugement de pâris 4 , à mettre en scène un dialogue entre Emmanuel Kant et Sigmund Freud autour de la beauté et du désir, supposé désintéressé, qui préside à notre rapport à l'art. On ne trouvera cependant dans ce livre ni synthèse philosophique, ni histoire des idées : le travail de réflexion est mené au plus près des oeuvres qui, de Marcantonio Raimondi à Édouard Manet et de Peter Paul Rubens à Antoine Watteau, ont transformé visuellement le récit mythique du choix d...
Dans les années 1820, l’édition française, suivant le modèle de l’ illustrated book , met la lithographie au service de ce que l’on commence à nommer l’ illustration . Dans le même temps, le terme imagerie , sorti de l’usage depuis la fin du Moyen Âge, revient dans la langue pour désigner les lieux où se fabriquent et se vendent les images destinées à un public populaire. Ces deux grandes familles d’images ne vont cesser de se croiser au cours du siècle : l’imagerie populaire s’industrialise, renouvelle ses thèmes, diversifie et élargit ses publics ; quant à l’illustration, non seulement elle envahit la presse, mais elle participe à l’engouement général pour les images. Si les réformateurs se montrent soucieux de tirer l’imagerie populaire vers le haut, les esprits critiques déplorent à la fois l’édulcoration de l’imagerie traditionnelle et la médiocrité de la nouvelle imagerie.
